Time Keeps on Slipping

They were waiting for him. Robert swallowed, mind racing before looking away from Hugh and shaking his head.

“Cut!” the director yelled.

Robert ran a hand over his face, twice as frustrated as those around him who were politely waiting for him to get his scene with Hugh right.

“Everyone has their off days,” Hugh said.

Robert moaned behind his hands before lowering them. “I don’t even know what the scene we are doing is about,” he mumbled. The odd thought crossed his mind that if he kept delaying the filming, they would fire him so he could go home and hibernate away the rest of his life.

Hugh threw an arm over his shoulder. “We’re going to brush up on the scene. Give us ten.” He grabbed a copy of the script and pulled Robert away, not waiting for an okay. He led them to an unused section of the set and pulled up a couple of chairs. “Do you want me to call Stephen and have him talk to Alan?”

“Just make things worse.”

“There’s a worse?”

“Tomorrow’s Valentines Day.”

“You’re not really my type.”

Robert cracked a small smile. “I can’t stop thinking about last year. Everything just seemed so perfect.”

Hugh sighed. “I’m sorry, but you have to get over him.”

“I know.” Robert said softly.

“Listen. We have a light schedule tomorrow. How about we go do something afterwards? Get your mind off things?”

“I don’t think I will be very good company.”

“Well, I have been with some very dull people before. As long as you aren’t competitive for the position, we’ll do fine. Now,” he shoved the script at Robert before he could start up a protest, “from the top.” Truth of the matter was, he was a little worried to leave Robert by himself over the holiday. Odds were slim that he would try anything, but that small percentage of doubt terrified him.

“Thank you,” Robert said, accepting the pages he was handed.

"You're buying"

Robert smiled, and for the first time in a week, Hugh thought he saw the small spark in Robert’s eyes that had been missing. This was a good thing. He needed Robert to keep his head in the game, regain his lost focus so they could both finish the season. A night out would do them both some good.

They both returned to the set and Hugh watched Robert run his lines, getting more confident with each word that passed his lips. Hugh wasn’t so sure about Robert, but at least Wilson was back and, after filming, he would work on getting Robert completely back.
