Planning Ahead Alan looked at Robert's sleeping form and leaned over to give him a gentle kiss before he slid out of bed. His feet touched the cool wood and he had to shush himself as he scampered out into the living room.
Alan grabbed the blanket off the couch and he wrapped it around himself. He was still shivering as he looked outside and watched the air swirl with small groups of delicate snow. He closed his eyes and saw the look of disdain on Robert's mother's face and tried to shake it free, but it was carved into his brain as were her words to him in the kitchen: "Robert will come around, you know. And he will find a wife. You are just his midlife crisis." They stabbed at him and he reopened his eyes, the hectic snow flurries calming.
Alan did believe in what they had, and he knew it had to be real, the real moments over the last 30 months all led to now. But even with the reassurances from Robert last night, Alan still felt a little off kilter. It was 5:50 in the morning and every part of Alan was awake. He knew that Robert would be asleep for hours still, and sitting around freezing his bollocks off in front of the window was not the best way to welcome the morning.
Alan dropped the blanket back on the couch and crept into the bedroom. He grabbed his track suit and shoes and dressed in the living room. He picked up his wallet and keys that he had lain next to Robert's. He put them both in his pockets, hand lingering to rub the familiar ridges of the apartment key Robert had given him so long ago. They would be okay, he told himself, pressing his thumb against the key so hard that he knew there would be an indent in his skin. Right now, running seemed like the best way to pound any doubts out of him. Or at least make them so small he could not hear them any more. They always ended up finding their way and Alan hoped that even without Joy's support, they would persevere.
The air outside was cold, so cold that it felt like icicles poked into his lungs with each breath. He pulled a wool cap over his head and headed out towards the park. The streets were almost quiet, with lumpy grey slush gathered at the kerbs.
Alan focused on his surroundings; the city. It was beautiful and dwarfing. The tall buildings seemed other worldly, especially before dawn. Alan moved anonymously from street to street towards the park. The city was still napping, seeming to have found an hour or two to rest before it sprung to life again. Alan looked down to avoid the semi solid puddles that dotted the streets. He was still cold, but could feel his body starting to warm up as he found his groove and set his pace.
Alan laughed to himself as he crossed the last street before entering the park. One big change Robert brought to his life was jogging. A pick up game of football was always a way to reduce his stress, but now he was putting on the trainers and hitting the pavement. Alan stopped to catch his breath at the entrance of the park. It looked in front of him like some great untraveresed wilderness. He put his hands on his hips and took a few gulps of air. He was surprised that street lights kept a steady watch over the park, faintly lighting the ground for the few dedicated joggers that could be seen and heard huffing and puffing along the clear paths.
He checked his shoes to make sure they were still tied securely and jumped up and down a few times to get his blood circulating again. One foot in front of the other and Alan started off into the park. All of yesterday blurred into a few nightmareish moments. Alan knew they were both dancing around the bigger problems hoping they would vanish. And Alan knew this was sure to backfire, but last night was nice. Just the two of them finding reassurance in each other.
Alan found the hard ground beneath his feet and looked out at the city streets, still simmering with energy, just waiting to awaken with the approaching dawn. He sighed and thought how much Traci would love to see the city, maybe once it was all dressed up for Christmas. It would be fun to show her around, take her to a show, and he knew how fond she was of Robert. He had no idea what her plans would be for the upcoming holiday. Then a thought occurred to him....Maybe he should check with Robert and Traci to see if they would want to arrange to be here for Christmas? He was sure Traci would be up for it and, with the way things were with Robert's family, he was pretty sure that Robert would enjoy seeing a few friendly faces.
Alan felt good. He had only made it about half a mile in before turning around and repeating the journey home. It was just enough to clear his head and put all of his worries to rest. He knew after a quick shower to warm up, he would have no problem sliding into bed next to Robert and finding time to rest. Peaceful rest.
He crept into the darkened apartment and stripped off his clothes as he walked into the bedroom, stopping for a second to watch Robert. Robert had moved over to Alan's side and was currently wrapped around a pillow. Alan was looking forward to replacing the pillow shortly. He smiled as he stepped into the bathroom and grabbed a quick shower.
Toweling off as much moisture as possible, Alan's now warm body shivered in the cool room and he slid into bed, pushing Robert gently over towards the middle and was gratified to hear a happy sigh from the body behind him. Alan held onto to one of Robert's hands and wrapped it around his middle, closing his eyes. Now, sleep had no trouble finding him.
