I’ll Stop the World and Melt With You

Robert stared up at the ceiling, barely able to see the light fixture in the gloom. Alan's head rested on his shoulder, arm running horizontally over his chest. Alan had drifted off to sleep over an hour ago, but sleep had yet to claim Robert. He could not stop the images and thoughts running through his mind. Various senarios of 'what if?' plagued his exhausted mind. What if he had grabbed Alan's hand so he couldn't leave? Would all the hateful things have been said if Alan was still there? Probably...only a matter of time. What if he had done a better job at confronting his mother? Maybe he could have finally driven his point home how serious things were between them. What if he had told her that if it came down to her or Alan, his choice would always be Alan? What if he had never decided to go to Thanksgiving in the first place? He could sense that it was going to be a disaster. What if....

He fisted the sheet, tensing and yelling a mental 'Stop!' to himself. He could make this go on all night. He did not want it to go on all night. He forced himself to relax and he played with a few small curls at the base of Alan's neck, trying not to think of anything else. Alan... He must have said something out loud, because Alan stirred, mumbling something into Robert's shoulder. Robert froze, hoping Alan would go back to sleep.

"Robert?"

"Hmm?" he replied with a small sigh.

"Still awake?"

Robert nodded, knowing that Alan would be able to feel the movement.

"Want to talk about it?"

"No. Not really. Go back to sleep, Alan."

Alan wrapped his arm tighter around his boyfriend's middle. "Give it some time. She will come around. Maybe by next Turkey Day."

Robert chuckled. "We can invite her here. She will have to behave then."

"Sounds like a brilliant plan. Be sure to invite Rachel. I liked her."

Robert kissed Alan's ear and pulled the blankets up a little higher. "A vegetarian Thanksgiving so we can make sure she won't forget."

"And invite whatever relatives didn't get invited this time."

"Hugh and Stephen might get a kick out of it..."

"What if we invited Jo Brand?"

"I think cousin Rachel would spar with her all evening."

Alan had to move his head back to the pillow because Robert was laughing. "So, think we can talk your mum into joining us?"

"Only if we stay vague on the details. Pictures," Robert suddenly added. "I think I would want some pictures to remember it all."

"Excellent idea, love. Now, go to sleep and we can continue to plot in the morning. We do have a whole year to work out the bugs and all."

Robert scooted closer to Alan and sighed tiredly when he felt arms wrap around him once again.

"We can't forget Traci, she has to be there," Robert whispered into the silence that had finally started to settle.

"Okay, Nigella, we can work on the guest list in the morning, sleep now, it's been a long day."

"Yeah," Robert agreed, already halfway there. "Sleep well, love you."

Alan listened as Robert's breathing slowed and evened out. Once Robert was finally asleep, Alan allowed himself to relax and joined him.
