Three Stories "It's not your mother," Robert was gritting out through clenched teeth as he walked in the door, Alan trailing close behind.
Robert had been nearly silent the entire train ride home and Alan was feeling helpless. He could not comfort Robert on the train and now Robert was keeping his distance. Alan sat down on the couch, taking off his jacket and laying it on the arm of the couch as he watched Robert pace around the house like a caged animal. Alan was just waiting for it to escalate to cupboard slamming.
"It is so frustrating, I just ...." Robert walked from the kitchen down the hall. Alan lost track of exactly what he was ranting about. He knew Robert would eventually run out of steam so he sat back and propped his feet up on the table.
"...would think she would at least try to be nice for my sake." Robert's voice came back as he walked through the living room. "All she is doing is pushing me away from my family. She treats me like a stranger, and she was just..."
Alan smiled as he watched his boyfriend, now in jammies, head back into the kitchen, still ranting at the world. Alan closed his eyes. It had been a long emotional day and all he wanted to do was sleep it out of his memory. Watching Robert pace around the room was only wearing him out more. Alan heard a few dishes rattle in the other room and was tempted to get up and see how Robert was, but he decided to wait it out on the couch. Today was a rough day, and better to have the china get the wrath than himself. Alan tucked his arms behind his head and closed his eyes, trying not to picture Robert naked and bent over the dining table. The image was persistent and no matter how much Alan tried to banish it from his mind, it stuck until he heard Robert enter the room.
"Tea?" Robert spat out more then suggested.
Alan cracked open his eye and considered his response to the question. "Sure, but maybe you can stop for a minute and sit, talk to me?" He choose to be supportive and not sarcastic.
Robert stopped and looked at Alan, really looked at him for the first time since they had left the house, and he felt his anger replaced by a new rush of emotions. He loved Alan and no matter how much his mother disapproved, he would continue to. And that was hard, to grieve for that loss, to know your mom was disappointed in you. "I love you," Robert said quietly, tears gathering in the corners of his eyes and he felt like his legs would give out on him if he did not sit down.
Alan saw Robert start to crumble and sprung up, taking the tray and setting it down on a credenza, and then wrapped his arms around Robert, feeling the weight of the day descend upon both of them. Alan wanted to move them someplace softer, but Robert seemed stuck here, so slowly Alan lowered them both to the ground and pulled Robert's head in against his shoulder and rubbed his hand up and down, giving comfort in place of words that would never heal the wounds Robert was just discovering.
Robert grabbed Alan's shirt, not really caring that he was stretching out the soft cotton fabric, but happy to have something solid to hold on to. He needed to cling to something for awhile, just until he stopped feeling so adrift.
”Hush, love, hush,” Alan whispered as he ran his hand up to Robert's neck and held him, slowly rocking them, not sure what else he could say. There were really no words that could change any of this. Robert's mother had been terrible to both of them and she had put a pall across the entire evening, but Alan knew bad mouthing her was not the right thing, or the prudent thing to do. Alan had no idea how long they sat on the floor of the darkened apartment, but finally Robert pushed back and stared into Alan's eyes. His brown eyes were darker then usual, and a few blood vessels stood out. Alan resisted the urge to kiss each eye and try to take away the pain that was evident in them.
"Thank you," Robert whispered into the eerie silence of the room.
Alan just smiled, letting Robert take the lead, knowing he had something that was very important he wanted to get out and Alan not wanting to interrupt.
"You never rose to her bait, and you put up with...well I don't know all she said to you, but tonight you were everything I love about you. You were funny, warm, compassionate and understanding. I know that being with you is what I want, and if I loose my mom, then that is something I have to deal with. I know my dad and everyone else, while a little uncomfortable, will all warm to you. Really how could they not? But if my mom can't see outside her narrow-minded world that you make me happier then anyone else ever had, so be it. Her loss. But..." Robert stopped, his stream of words running dry.
Alan smiled at Robert. He was practically bursting with happiness and wanted so much to just freeze this moment. He finally felt that they were on the same page, but the fact that it was at the loss of his mom saddened him. He did not want it to color this moment. Not able to resist, Alan leaned forward and pressed his lips softly to Robert's. A gentle kiss, warmth passing between them, the days events bringing them closer then anything else had.
"Can we just stay here for a little bit longer?" Robert rested his head on Alan's shoulder and pulled him closer.
"Anything you want, love." Alan wrapped his arms tightly around Robert, pulling him in against his chest. He ran his hands up and down Robert's spine, pressing his lips to Robert's head. Alan closed his eyes and was happy to stay there for as long as Robert needed him. "Anything you want. Love," he whispered one last time.
