Previous story:
Voicemail Hell Alan was so tired that he couldn't sleep. It was almost 2am the last time he dared to look at his clock. Sighing, he reached for his phone. It was only around 9 at night in New York. Maybe Robert could help relax him.
"Hello?" A large yawn cut the last vowel short.
"Robert? Did I wake you?"
"Almost. Haven't made it to the bedroom yet."
"Pardon, love, but you sound awful."
"Thanks. My day started at 6. Had an Ausiello interview."
Alan winced in sympathy. He remembered how well that guy's interviews normally went. "What did he want?"
"He was wondering if I would be making any appearances next season. I think he was also looking for his next hot news story. He also attempted to quiz me about my love life."
Alan chuckled. "And you said...?"
"I did the happily single routine." Robert yawned again. "Why are you still up?"
"Can't sleep. But not for lack of bloody trying." He rubbed his eyes with thumb and forefinger. "Don't want to keep you up, love, if you're heading to bed."
"No, don't go, Alan. I have a few things left to do before I crash. Keep me company?"
"Of course. What's on your agenda?" Alan got out of bed and headed to his kitchen for something to drink.
"Teeth, undress, bed."
Alan laughed as he pawed through the refrigerator. "What's your day like tomorrow?"
"Clear from interviews, need to pack, the movers are picking up what I am taking back to New York this week."
"That must make you happy. Leaving LA."
"It is weird to leave after 5 years, but I am happy to be going back to New York."
"Any other plans?"
Alan heard running water.
"Sleeping in, a bit. Might go for a jog if the weather is under 90. Sec, putting you on speaker. Can you hear me?"
"Yeah." Alan listened as Robert got his toothbrush and paste out, closing his eyes and trying to picture Robert's movements. "Has it been getting hot in New York?" Alan finally opened his eyes and continued his beverage search.
Robert made a confirmatory sound as he brushed this teeth, not speaking again until he spit in the sink. "80 degrees by noon."
Alan settled on some juice and poured half a glass, leaning his back against the counter as he sipped at it. "Cool here. But I expect that to change when you finally get your arse up over here."
Robert chuckled and the running water stopped. A scrape of the phone as it was picked back up. "Taking you to my bedroom now." His voice sounded far away, still on speaker.
"Tease."
Robert replied with a loud yawn.
"Taking off your clothes?" Alan queried.
"Wouldn't you like to know?"
Alan snorted. "Of course I would."
"Oh, no. We're not playing this game. You know how unsatisfactory it is when I fall asleep in the middle of things."
"Can you at least tell me where I am set at?"
"Bed by my pillow."
Alan strained his ears and thought he could hear a rustle of clothing, but it might have been his imagination. But then he heard the bedsprings creak. "Wish I could kiss you goodnight."
He heard the phone switch off speaker, then Robert's voice softly whispered in his ear, "I know."
"G'night, love."
"Night, Alan. See you soon."
Alan listened for a moment more, then hung up. He drained the rest of his juice, then went to bed. The sheets were now cold, but hearing from Robert had warmed him up and he had no trouble falling fast asleep.
