Previous story:
The Impatient Patient Alan tapped his foot impatiently, waiting for Robert to pick up the phone. "Are you here yet?" he asked when it was finally answered, a smile plastered on his face.
"Would it help to say I am outside flagging a cab right now?"
"Not really, but at least you're on your way."
"Well, just a few more hours. Cab is here. I'll call when I get checked in to the airport?"
"Okay, bye."
Alan hung up and paced around his apartment. He knew there were still seven hours until Robert was actually in the same country and the anticipation was getting to him. It was easier to count six weeks down than six hours.
Alan put on last night's match and sat back in his chair trying to not stare at his phone. It seemed like half a lifetime passed, but in reality it was closer to an hour, before Alan heard the familiar ring on his cell. He grinned as he double checked the caller ID.
"So, you made it past security?"
"It was touch and go for a few, but luckily I checked all my liquids," Robert gave a dramatic sigh, "so they let me through."
"Good for me," Alan teased back.
"Good for me as well. The flight leaves in about 90 minutes, so I have a little time. I'm going to look for a book to read, but I doubt I will be able to focus on anything that needs my full attention."
"You got your place all closed up?"
"Yeah, I cleaned half the night. I think I'm moved back in--just a few more boxes to unpack."
"All settled in, I guess." Alan tried to keep the disappointment out of his voice.
"Enough about me...What are you doing?"
"Watching last night's match. I went to the shops last night, so we actually have food."
"Food is helpful."
"I picked up Curly Wurlys for you too."
"Oh great! I love those. And I packed the movies Lisa sent for us."
"Did you have room for clothes?"
"Yes," Robert laughed. "She only sent four of them, not too many. She made me promise that we would watch them and e-mail or call her."
"Of course. I think we can find time since I don't plan on us leaving the flat for a long time."
"It sounds stupid but you know what I want...?"
"What Robert?" Alan held his breath.
"I've just missed the...I can't do this at the airport, this gets..." He trailed off, sounding frustrated.
Alan really needed to stop building up his hopes. He had a feeling he might be in for a lot of disappointments. "How's the weather?" he asked instead, as eager for a change of subject as Robert probably was.
"Thanks. It's not like you to let me off the hook so easily."
"You are almost here and I'm feeling generous."
"Alan, there just seems to be so much to say, I don't..."
"Robert, are you okay? You sound..."
"Yeah, I think I am anxious about everything. I'm unemployed for the first time in six years, I have missed...They really need some rooms here so I could get a little privacy."
"A few more hours, and we can talk all you want, well...a little talking and a little bit of other stuff."
"You are really wonderful, you know that."
"Robert," Alan closed his eyes and pressed his head hard against the back of his settee. "How much longer now?"
"We board in an hour."
Alan's phone beeped: Another call was trying to come through.
"Do you need to get that?"
Alan checked. "It's Tracy..."
"Talk to her and I will call you when I get through customs if I can. I will see you soon, and be able to really talk to you."
"Alright, but I have better ideas on how you can use those lips. Love you!"
"Bye."
Alan took a deep breath and debated on whether to answer Traci's call or not. Distractions are good, he told himself, and right now he needed about five hours worth. “Hey, sis...”
