I just started getting caught up on Big Love and I am delighted with the new opening credits. Fucking GORGEOUS.

I loved the old opening credits and part of the DVD was a behind the scenes look at the filming and it was just so cool that they put so much thought into it. It has to be the same guy who did Six Feet Under's opening credits- which I ( Read more... )

I like Big Love, and I really want to like the new credit sequence, but...it feels...kinda...self-indulgent. To me. I like the effect, certainly, but I don't know...there's a bit too much parted-lipped tortured eye-contact with the camera, and I feel like the sequence is about 30% too long. I'd definitely fast forward or skip it after the first viewing.

Of shows currently on the air, I'm a pretty big fan of the Dexter opening sequence. I think the music is especially appropriate - darkly playful and subversive - like the images and the show itself.

I think the Dexter sequence needs some editing. All the images are not equally strong. or it needed to be played with a bit more humor, which I know sounds sick but it's how I feel. :)
I agree with everything you said about the Big Love intro except that it's too long- because I do so love it. I'm OK with getting these long close-ups on their faces because I'm so convinced that they are these characters that's like finally getting to study them not in fast motion. And they are a self absorbed crew- so the indulgence feels appropriate and the filming even a little competitive.
I DECLARE IT A SUCCESS ONCE MORE!

...wow. I'm not particularly squeamish, but I have no desire to see that last clip ever again.

I know! It's hard to believe it's entertainment.
I think there is a huge difference between not being squeamish and not wanting to see a living them intentionally hurt. I know that seems a little obvious but it wasn't until a movie came out that showed a lot of POW torture and a friend was talking about why he wouldn't go see it (and he's got some HARD eyes) that the degree of difference that exists there was made clear to me.

There's degrees, yeah--I'm okay (such as it is) about people getting beaten up or shot, but tortured (like this, for instance?) Actively unpleasant to watch.

I'm also a lot better with photos of nasty shit--I can skim rotten.com all day--than with video. (I don't enjoy watching surgical videos, either, or live surgery.)
