Not sure of distances:
8 Busch Gardens in Tampa was fun
8 Sanibel Island is great for shell collecting and hikes - stay in Ft Myers maybe
8 Cape Canaveral tour would be fun and probably free

Key West is about 300 miles from Tallahassee. Well, in a straight line anyway.

As the crow flies, maybe. But as a car drives it's over 600 miles away. :D

Don't know much about places near where you live but one way to save money is to stay in some bed and breakfast place (at least in Estonia these hostel type of things are much cheaper then regular hotels) and there's also two sites Hospitality Club and Couch Surfing, you might ask people from there some advice, they are usually very friendly and know about things, I used them to ask some tips about London. I am sure you’ll find some people near where you’re from.

One option is also rent a tent, although I am not sure if you have there companies who rent camping equipment.

Costco has great deals on tents - or so I have heard because I am unable to camp due to nature aversions including but not limited to fear of dirt. My girlfriend just got a great tent for $49.99 there.

Have you ever been to Mt. Dora in Florida? Such a charming place - very calm and unspoiled. You can bring Powerbars and waters and stop at grocery stores for fruit etc. which makes things cheap and nice so you can splurge at dinner time. I LOVE Cracker Barrel, but I am slightly tacky I think, so that's my favorite travel place ever. Because Waffle House gives me the jibbers. How about a nice trip through Georgia?

Memorial Day is always crowded - but you could leave late and travel at night to avoid monster traffic.

Costco? I don't think we have those here.

My mom went to Mt. Dora a few years ago and really liked it. I don't know much about it.

Waffle House IS a bit icky. It's where my husband and I shared our very first meal (off of I-10 between Jacksonville and Tallahassee), though! :D

No Costco? How about Sams Club? Or Walmart - yes Walmart will have tents cheap.

Callaway is beautiful, I love it, but the time to visit, really, is Christmas/winter.

Run down to Destin/Seaside area...they have camping somewhere, unsure where but I do know they have them, lolol. ^^

Coleman is a good brand of tent.
