I watched a documentary about self-amputation a couple months ago. I agree that it was quite interesting.
One of the gentlemen featured in the documentary finally got up the courage to do it... and then his wife left him, because she thought it was gross, or something. She didn't want to be seen with an amputee. Here he was, feeling better than he'd felt in years because he'd finally frozen off his arm (or done whatever to whatever appendage), and then his wife up and left him. I felt horrible for the poor guy.
it is really weird. they compare these amputees to people with "gender dysphoria", which isn't a term i like and i don't agree wholeheartedly with the comparison.
feeling that you are the wrong gender (which affects your personal/sexual interactions with the world/yourself) i feel is different than feeling that a body part inhibits you or doesn't belong to your body. from what i know of the gender thing, transgendered people don't simply want a different sexual organ... they want a suitable physical identity.
i guess amputees argue that they want a disabled identity. what do you think about that comparison?
don't feel too sad for him (although having your wife leave you is pretty extreme) because apparently there are all sorts of fetishists out there that desire a self-amputated mate.
