"Don't eat the pumpkins", huh? That's a new one. I doubt it'll be any more interesting than the last "mission", but sure. Maybe this time I'll play along

How about gratitude? Doing things because it's right? Or even on the off chance that someone you help will help you in return some day, whether you ask it or not? Are you really going to turn people away if they can offer you nothing?

Is that what you think?
[He's a pretty cynical kind of guy. For a teenager, he has little to no faith in anything, and he has no problem showing that he's not gloomy about it.]
There's no such thing as that kind of selflessness. No one gives what they can't afford. If you give your last bit of cash, food, or anything else to someone, it's because you know you can live without it. If you give your life for someone, it's because your own life is a smaller price to pay than theirs. At this point, it's a higher risk to get involved with strangers than it is not to, so I need compensation.

So you don't think someone might give their own life without thinking of the worth of another, say, saving a stranger they'd never met before? People don't always weight up how much something is worth before they do it.
If you're giving your life for someone you don't know, you don't value yourself very much, do you? You're still making the decision to do it. Even if it's too fast to think it out consciously, you're still deciding to risk or give up your own life, which means that you consider your life something you can afford to lose.
Anyway, a normal person will freeze with shock in that kind of moment. It's natural to preserve yourself. Your body won't let you die without at least subconsciously making the conclusion that doing so is worth it.
[More frustrating than anything is that Anders can't tell if he finds the conversation irritating because the man isn't listening to him, or if it's because he has a point that the mage doesn't like to think about.]
So you're saying you won't help others because you think you're worth more than them, and anyone who does otherwise is only doing it because they think they're worthless?
You're making it too black and white, but that's about it. People do things that they think are worth it. To me, giving away my help isn't worth it. Their gratitude means nothing to me.
[He's crossing his arms and leaning back about now, completely relaxed.]
There's only one person whose well-being is worth any sacrifice from me.
Then again... I think he might agree with you on some counts. He really cares about the country, although that could also be said to be a matter of his perception of worth.

[He doesn't believe that incredibly likely, something his voice makes obvious.]
And what do you mean by 'afford it'? Not everyone only helps by giving out things they can afford to lose.

[Yeah, he's a little bitter about the 'black and white' comment and makes no effort to hide it.]

Then again, I don't care that much about politics. I'd protect him regardless of social station.

[There's probably some sort of irony to that fact that he's the one saying that.]
