I just recently got back from a few weeks in Japan visiting my friend. We went on a road trip all over the place. It's really quite weird being in a place as technological as Western society but with a very different psychology behind it. Cool!
Though I was less keen on what I saw of Tokyo. Kyoto is the place to be for culture and pretty things, but maybe the mad lights and insane crowdedness is what he's after!

Games, electronics, noodle bars, and fast food, he says. But we are definitely going to watch a documentary or two about modern Japanese living, because I am hoping he will change his mind.

people always look at me strangely when I say I want to go to Kyoto - and say don't you mean Tokyo! I am glad to hear it is as pretty as I imagine it to be - one day I shall find out for myself

perhaps the lack of eco-warrior thing is to do with the culture difference - a more accepting eastern idea of balance opposed to our western guilt complexes...
