Who Hearts Knoppix?

So I've heard trochee rave about Knoppix endlessly before, and now I finally some personal experience from which to add my 2 cents. I am seriously impressed that when my Windows PC won't even boot (we're talking black/blank-screen), I can pop in Knoppix CD and have nearly full-functionality instantly. Yeah, I'd totally do it too if i didn't have to use word so much. I guess there isn't a really good writing tool on the system. Unless you transfer files to adobe which is pretty cool too, but ... costs money. :(

i wonder if you could run open office off it? i find it a good equivalent to word.

open office comes with knoppix. my old machine was a dual boot, which worked really well. if i weren't so lazy, i'd set this one up to be one, too. linux is a wonderful thing.

openoffice.org comes with knoppix. it's compatible with word.

My mother's PC, running an original Win98 install approaching 6 years of dementia, ran like a champ with a Knoppix disc -- though I had to burn the disc using PuppyLinux because 'dose was so hosed it would crap out after about 100-150MB of the burn ... at 2x. I mean, the machine would literally crash or spontaneously reboot 8-12 times a day. Worked fine with Knoppix.

Also, not everything -ix is free software. UNIX itself isn't (and wasn't) and this is the basis of the SCO lawsuit. There have been a lot of *nixes and most of them haven't ever been free. :)
