The exact error would be really helpful.

The other thing you can check is to make sure the profile didn't get munged in some way. This has happened to me before with other Mozilla variants, as well as Photoshop, where profile data gets corrupted and impairs basic usage. Even a complete re-install doesn't delete this info.

On a Windows box, the profiles are typically kept in:

C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You could try renaming (not deleting) the whole "Mozilla" directory under Application Data for your login to something like "Mozilla.old" and re-installing/re-running Firefox. If that doesn't work, try posting the exact error.

is it possible that the network the machine is on is blocking outbound requests on port 80, and forcing users to go through an http proxy? The proxy settings should be preserved across updates in theory, but uh, that's the theory...

you can look at the IE proxy settings in Internet Options|Connections|LAN Settings, i think. i think you can do the same in firefox under Preferences|General|Connections, or something like that.

Good on you for keeping him current, though. I've actually found people using Netscape 4 recently. yikes!

The firewall settings sound like a possible culprit as well, but that would only be specific for an XP system, though. is he running XP?
