I'm so proud of you for finally making an appointment (ignorant relay users be damned). Too bad you will have to wait until spring for the running water. *gentle smile*
How do cochlear implants work? I've got a couple friends who are deaf, but one of them uses a hearing aid and the other has enough of her hearing left that she can generally get by with that and lip reading, so I don't know much, if anything, about cochlear implants.

So the implant basically takes over the function of the hair cells, and the the microphone and processor perform the function of the outer/middle ears?

I'm not sure I would go that far... it's more, the implant takes over the function of the hair cells, and the external/middle ears are just bypassed by the microphone/processor because the implant has to have sound converted to electrical impulses to be able to conduct it to the hearing nerve.
I know there are newer and different kinds of implants, but I'm not sure whether there's anything yet that incorporates the actual structure of the external/middle ear into the process. Now THAT would be nifty.

I'm sure I can find some stream that doesn't freeze. Although *I* may freeze in the process...
