It’s as if she’s standing in front of a broken mirror and looking at her reflection. It’s her reflection being reflected back at her but the cracks distort the image so that it’s her but it’s not her at the same time. Echo tentatively rises up a hand to touch the face of her doppelganger, but stills when the other woman tenses. There’s something innately dangerous about her double and Echo can tell that she’s a predator. She briefly wonders what the other woman sees when she looks at her.

“Who the fuck are you?”

The words are snarled and Echo takes a step backwards, her hand going for her gun but her doppelganger manages to get the jump on her first. Echo finds herself pinned with a hand on her throat.

“I asked you a question.”

“Echo.”

She can barely get the words out; the hand is that tight around her throat. The woman looks at her and eases up. Just enough so that Echo can breathe again.

“And you?” Echo spits out.

“Faith.”

Before Echo can process it, Faith has drawn a dagger against the flesh on Echo’s arm. Echo flinches as the sharp blade cuts into her skin, not enough to cause serious damage but enough that she bleeds. Faith pulls her up into a sitting position and pushes a flask into her hand and Echo takes a sip of the contents. She looks at Faith in surprise at the taste of the flat water.

“So you’re not a demon,” Faith says as she lets Echo go.

“No, not a demon,” Echo replies in confusion.

She thinks that maybe her double isn’t as sane as she first appeared to be. Perhaps some imprint of some vampire wannabes that one of the other houses programmed since there were certain things that even Adelle and Topher wouldn’t do.

Faith pushes some of her hair back off of her face as she takes a step backwards.

“I’ve seen some pretty fucked up shit in my life but this takes the cake. I guess you’re not a Slayer.”

“No, not a slayer either. What’s a slayer?”

“Long story, too long to get into right now. It’s not safe here, we got get moving,” Faith says as she helps Echo stand up.

“I am not going anywhere until you tell me what’s going on.”

“Look Echo we don’t have time for this.”

Before Echo can respond, a figure bursts into the room. Her mouth drops at the sight of it. It looks vaguely human but the face is all ridged and bumped with prominent fangs and yellow eyes. It’s a monster of some sort and Echo knows that it’s not a mask. Faith curses and thrusts a wooden stick into her hand when another two burst into the room with a feral grin.

“If one comes close to you, aim for the heart, don’t let it bite you either, got that?” Faith shouts before she pushes Echo behind her.

“Sh-sure,” Echo numbly agrees.

She watches as Faith moves into action, another stake in her hand and she’s tackling the first monster before punching the second and kicking the third. Echo can barely keep up with Faith’s moves and she’s been trained in fighting. The first one explodes into a cloud of fine ash and dust and another one snarls as it enters the room but Faith doesn’t even pause. When one comes to close to Echo, she punches it and drives the stake through the heart. It’s a hard task but she manages it somehow. Her monster explodes as well and soon enough she’s back to back with Faith, fighting the monsters that seem to flood into the room.

When it’s over, Echo is panting while Faith seems to have barely broken a sweat.

“Let’s get out of here before anymore come, I think that you and I need to have a long talk.”

Echo nods her head in agreement. “I know just the place.”
