I've been reading "Sophie's World" and enjoying it (Thanks, Default!) and realizing that I want to go to school for the sake of it. It's too damned bad that real life gets in the way of that which you'd like to do in order to grow as a person.

Have you read Ayn Rand's "Philosophy: Who Needs It?"

I've more or less taken the last two and a half years off of life to try and grow as a person and I'm not sure I'm much better for it, if it's an consolation.

I find that growth happens when you let it. My gf is fashioning a little philosophy course for me. It's adorable. What in the food world is exciting you these days? The last things to really get me pumped were Thai and non-traditional American BBQ. I keep floating, trying to find that exciting flavor that keeps eluding me. Right now, I'm happy with mushrooms. And some fish, but I think the stripers are done running, so... yeah ( ... )

I'm sort of drawn to Basque/Provencal flavors at the moment, but my budget fails me a bit to do much about it. After this move we're trying to keep our monthly grocery budget limited to only $200 (we have a jar filled with bills and change and everything), at least for now, so I suppose I'm "inspired" by those constraints. Just doing the best I can with what's in season, since it's still summer, and sticking to cheaper cuts of meat like flank steak, chicken legs, and eating more meatless/bean/lentil based meals and so on. I guess that's not really completely out of the ordinary though. I'm pretty limited on condiments at the moment, so it's been mostly simple food with the rosemary, sage and bay leaves I've been growing and not much more for seasoning but that, olive oil, chilies, salt and pepper ( ... )

That's especially funny-- my copy of "Crust" just shipped today. I don't eat bread anymore, but man I love to make it!
Braised shank sounds lovely, if a touch unseasonal right now. Although, at least here in Boston, fall is literally breathing down our necks (chilly wind today!)
