This is so sad. I grew up among drug addicts and alcoholics, and I know what difficulties addiction can bring. But, when I read about someone who is actually trying to make things better for themselves, it makes me really, really sad.
You're right about the tragedy thing too. We all think we're safe, that we live in a bubble where nothing bad can touch it. Usually, our bubble has to burst before we realize that it simply isn't true.
His mom is having the hardest time. It was four years ago, and she can't talk about it hardly without crying. She calls my mom from time to time just because she is so upset.
My best friend died nearly three years ago, a few months before her 21st birthday. She was on holidays in Switzerland, and there was a white water rafting accident. I will never forget the day I found out. I identify so much with this piece - wonderful writing that deals with a tough topic. Thank you.
