A socially important book

If you haven't read this for whatever reason, you should. I think it should be required reading for every student -- or just everyone in general -- to raise awareness about the homeless issue. I just did a term paper on the subject for sociology (and got an "A" and praise about the writing, yay me!), which is the reason I stumbled upon this book in ( Read more... )

I'm also in a high tourist area. We, too, have a big issue with homelessness. And, as we have a very mild winter, the problem is getting bigger each year. As an educator (teach 6th grade), I see it. I teach at an inner city school and we have several students that are classified as homeless. As a matter of fact, I have a both a brother and sister this year who are living in a one room motel room b/c that is all the family can afford, especially since the parents both do drugs. :(

I've not read the book, but I see it daily in the lives of my students. And it sucks!

It's a problem I think most people are just completely unaware of. You know, I'm buying a house and the man at the bank I'm dealing with told us that by the end of the year, 200,000 people will be losing their homes because they'll be two mortgage payments behind. They're getting these loans easily, but they don't have a fixed rate (we do, thank God) and the payments go up. So everything is fine at first -- they can handle the mortgage -- then it spirals out of control. How scary is that?

I think homelessness in Florida is getting worse. I guess it's worse all over, but it seems like St. Augustine is really getting crowded with the homeless population. We only have one shelter, too. And no one should have to live in a motel, especially not a family. I've been seeing a lot of this, too. It makes you really scared for the future!
