"...I send my thoughts to far-off destinations..."

One of our instructors has noted that we are the most literate EN BOLC class he's ever seen. In support of this claim, I note that since my arrival at FLW just over a month ago, I have finished five books, am halfway through a sixth, and have just begun a seventh. Prior to that, I'd read only four books since shipping to Basic in February. ( Read more... )

Yay for Sandman reading classmates! (did I ever tell you about the Sandman guy at Tech? I totally wanted to jump him get to know him better, but alas, it was not to be)

I'm sorry other things are going so poorly. We're all ready to listen if you feel like talking.

Did you ever get to finish Watchmen?

Yes, indeed. I am all in favour of classmates who share my taste in literature. (No, you didn't! Do tell. How sad that you never got to know him.)

I did, yes; finished it last Saturday. And yes, it lived up to my expectations. Really well done. I am SO looking forward to the movie now.

Okay, than I shall tell you about it. It was like a FATE moment. I was reading the last Sandman TPB in the student lounge, and he came up to me and asked me fervently if I'd read it before, and didn't I love the Sandmanverse/Gaiman's stuff in general, and he was DAMNED CUTE and attractively flirtatious, but his teammates dragged him off to a meeting and I graduated two weeks later and never saw him again.

CURSES.

I'm so glad you liked it! It's one of those books that's worth reading over and over again just to catch all of the visual symbolism one misses the first time in the rush to get through the linguistic narrative. There's a great Sandman companion online that compiles all of the little visual cues (like the use of the Hiroshima Lovers, for instance) for easy reference.

Oh, tragedy. That IS a shame. (Don't you hate those "the one that got away" moments? If only for the "what if"s they inspire....)

I know! It's amazingly complex and subtle. There are so many layers to the story....

A Sandman companion? Really? Now that must be fascinating.

I wish you would post about your books. I'm ready to do another book post myself (now that I have a computer again).

Hm. D'you know, I'd somehow gotten it into my head that such a post would be silly/boring? What a strange idea; I don't have any clue whence it may have come. Perhaps I will.

Are you? Yay! I'm looking forward to it.

How could it be silly/boring if it's something you would look forward to reading? Of course you should, I have to know what you're reading and then what you're thinking. I must know. I must!

Yes, but don't worry, I won't make it as long-winded as my last one. That was a bear.

Fine, fine; twist my arm, why don't you?

I know, it was completely illogical. I have seen the error of my ways. Don't count on anything in the immediate future (homework trumps, alas), but I'll try to get around to it before the week is out.

As if you even could be too long-winded for my liking.... For your liking - yes, I imagine that would be possible. But for mine? I doubt it.

I'm so glad you're getting to read again!

And I want to apologize. I'm so sorry I monopolized your time with my woes. Know I love you, pray for you, and am always open to listen if you want to talk.

What the hell are you talking about? Thank you for the sentiment, but you know I don't mind in the slightest. I want to hear about your woes if you want to talk about them.
