In the PC realm, I'm personally a fan of toshiba. Pretty good reliability reputation - i.e. less likely to crap out on you before its time - and given your preferences, it's probably decently affordable. Just get a huge hard drive and lots of RAM (you always want lots of RAM given the way most people work on computers these days), and don't worry too hard about the rest. For your purposes, even 'weaker' hardware combinations will be more than you need. I just popped onto their website and found a laptop matching my suggestions - including a 200 gig hard drive (if you want more than that, that's possible, but you'd have to customize) - for about $950: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?seg=HHO&poid=393786&in_merch=1... )
Hmm. I suppose I probably know a fair bit about laptops. I've always bought Dells; cheap, and rarely any hardware problems (although my most recent one seems to have been cursed), but IBM Thinkpads are more prevalent here at CMU and a lot of people swear by them

A bit more buck for your bang, but you can get one helluva good warranty, and they're pretty bulletproof. Plus, the nubbin mouse is awesome. If you don't use it as a mouse, you can set it up as a 2-way scrollpoint.
Agreed RE XP vs. Vista. Vista blows. I'm thinking about BUYING XP to replace the Vista install I have on my Thinkpad. It's that much of a system hog.
