It's a manageable feature which allows you to receive emails/text message or IMs when LJ has news or when your someone adds you as a friend, etc. Go here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/subscriptions/ to manage the settings.

Welcome back! I've used 'message' to send private messages to other users. Also I have a big, spammy inbox where LJ notifies me of every news item, comment, and friend added.
