The worst I've ever had a car smell came courtesy of my brother-in-law, who dumped eleven pounds of rice in our car as a bridal gift. The car leaked, it rained, the rice fermented, and for months afterward it smelled like Saki.

I assume you use this type of product in Europe, but if not it's something you put into the rinse cycle of your laundry that has the effect, other than imparting a (usually) pleasant scent, makes your clothes softer, and eliminates static during the drying.
It works in much the same way hair conditioner does, by coating the fibres of the fabrics, giving them a softer, smoother feel.
In earlier, pre-Irene days I didn't bother to use it, or at best used a cheap generic no-name brand. While these do not have as nice an aroma, I am still convinced that they do have the same softening/anti-static effect. As for the scent, that didn't matter to me because after all, if yuo can't smell it anyway, how would you know? Now of course, Little Miss Sensiti-Nose insists on the brand name fabric softeners. And who am I to argue? If it makes me smell better, all is good.
