I'm wondering how easy it would be to buy a castle somewhere in Eastern Europe, and where it would be most possible to get hold of a nice one. And would it be doable during communist times?

The plot in question is about a vampire who desires to own his own castle...

Nowadays: very easy. Communist times - doubt it, unless the vampire in question spent years cultivating the local authorities and had a lot of bribes on various levels to offer.

During communist times it would probably be the other way around where the state expropriates all kinds of private properties.
