Short answer: By letting too much twist get in the single.

Longer and less cryptic answer: When you're spinning fiber, if you're not careful, you can treadle more quickly than necessary, or be treadling in the wrong gear. Picture what happens if you're twisting a towel, for example. There's a point where you have an evenly twisted cylinder of fabric, and if you go past that point, the towel starts kinking and twisting on itself, losing its flexibility.

Overspinning is a pretty common beginner's mistake (as I keep telling myself). There are a few things you can do to overcome it, but it all boils down to practicing over and over again until you get it right.
