He may have been new to this whole relationship thing, but he was pretty sure that by now, they should have at least kissed.
It’d been three weeks since they’d stumbled over the first, “I love you.” Well, Touya had stumbled. Yukito had rather fluidly and gracefully said it Friday night as they were finishing watching a movie in Touya’s thankfully empty living room. Then, without waiting for a response from Touya, he’d slid over and snuggled up against him, as if he’d been doing it forever.
As if he knew that Touya wouldn’t mind.
Touya shook his head and glanced around the classroom. No one seemed to have noticed how unusually distracted he was today. Sighing, he shifted positions so he had a better view of the clock, and proceeded to watch his teacher with one eye and the clock with the other.
It was going to be a long time until lunch.
-----
They always ate lunch together, usually as far from the school as legally possible, under a tree. Sometimes they crossed over to the elementary school and ate with Sakura and her friends. Occasionally, if their privacy was disturbed, they would move to an empty classroom or the roof.
Today was definitely a roof day. No one ever went up there, except the two of them, so it would be a safe place to approach the… topic that had been hounding Touya’s mind.
Without girls seeing them and either bursting into tears or turning into rabid fangirls and glomping them. Both of which would be… bad.
He bolted from the room as soon as lunch began, waiting impatiently by the door for Yukito to exit. Why in the world did it take him so long to pack up his things? And why was he wasting time chatting? He had to will himself not to barge in there, grab Yukito’s wrist, and drag him away from the fawning girls.
Yukito exited, still oblivious to the attentions of the girls, only to find himself bodily yanked down the hallway by his elbow. Strange, he thought, I didn’t know my elbow… Then he saw Touya’s dark, calloused hand gripping his, and he smiled.
They took the stairs quickly, Yukito, though uncomfortable, never attempting to extract himself from Touya’s deathgrip on his arm. As soon as they were on the roof in blissful solitude and silence, Touya let go so that they could sit down, backs against the fence, munching contentedly on riceballs and pickled vegetables.
Well, Touya at least was satisfied by that. Yukito had that, and another supermarket’s worth of deli products in the large paper bag in his lap, and he was staring at it curiously. Probably wondering where to start, Touya thought.
“You still hungry?” Touya asked, concerned. He thought Yukito’s appetite should have decreased to a more… normal level once he’d given Yue his magic.
Yukito blinked owlishly and grinned, taking a bite out of a sandwich. “Kind of. I think it’s a bit of a habit, now, but it’s not as though my body isn’t able to handle it.” No kidding. Even eating that much, Yukito remained as slim as a willow.
Touya didn’t press the issue. Even though the whole incident with Yue had ultimately brought them to the point of three Fridays ago, it was still a somewhat tender subject. Instead, he allowed them to fall back into their usual and companionable silence. He picked at his lunch, not sure now how to approach the subject of…
“To-ya? Is something wrong? You’re being awfully quiet, and you’re not eating your lunch.” Leave it to Yukito to notice when food wasn’t being eaten.
Touya set down his lunch, staring at it for a few moments, sensing Yukito’s worried eyes on him. Finally, he looked up, staring at Yukito’s shoulder rather than his face.
“Yuki… I…” He leaned towards the silver-haired boy, repositioning his hands besides Yukito’s knees, until they were close, very close. Until their faces were, he was sure, only inches apart. Not that he was going to stop studying Yukito’s shoulder in order to find out.
He took a deep breath, turned to face Yukito, and-
“TOUYAAAAAA!”
He swore he was on the verge of having a heart attack as both he and Yukito jumped, he falling backwards to put some distance between them and Yukito falling forwards, hoping for safety in numbers. It ended with them in a rather awkward position, Yukito leaning forward, one hand planted squarely between Touya’s legs and the other beside his hip, straddling one of Touya’s legs. One of Touya’s hands had instinctively jumped to support Yukito in his fall, and was now resting comfortably on Yukito’s side.
They stared at each other, surprised, for a few moments, then quickly looked around for the already-known source of the delighted cry that had shocked them both.
“Oh my! I mean, Yue can be a bit harsh and cold, but I didn’t think that would make Tsukishiro-san the top! And Touya-kun! I thought you would be too proud to be the bottom!”
Once his brain had processed what Akizuki was saying, Touya wasted no time in reacting.
“W-w-what? We haven’t even- What makes you think-“ Touya sputtered, squirming angrily. In the process, he let go of Yukito and twisted, causing Yukito to lose his already precarious balance and collapse, sprawled over Touya, head pillowed firmly against Touya’s chest.
Which only encouraged Akizuki.
“So aggressive! And at school too!” She grinned, flipping her hair around. “I promise not to tell anyone, ‘kay?” Then she skipped off through the door that neither of them had even heard opening, leaving them to extract themselves from their tangled mess.
-----
“Really, is there a point in you teasing them like that? The magic’s gone, it belongs to Yue now, so you’re not getting anything out of it.”
“It’s not like that, Suppi-chan.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“Did you see the look on Touya’s face? It was priceless.” She sighed. “Someone really needs to whack those two over the head and get them going like a good little snow bunny and his mate. And I’m just the person for the job. Otherwise they’ll sit and make eyes at each other for the rest of the school year, which, if you ask me, is a complete waste of their time. There are better things they could be doing. They’ll thank me later, I’m sure.”
Spinel snorted. “Wrecking havoc is what you do best.”
-----
Touya was too embarrassed to say anything to Yukito as they picked up their lunch and returned to the classroom, and Yukito didn’t press him. They went quietly back to class and sat down. Yukito diligently took notes, since he and Touya were going to be studying after school, and Touya went back to watching the teacher with one eye and the clock with the other.
By the time class ended Yukito seemed to have forgotten the episode at lunch, and was chattering away to a distracted Touya. He was thinking about being alone in his room with Yukito. Surely… there wouldn’t be anyone to disturb them, and they could… well…
Well, it certainly wasn’t going as far as Akizuki thought it was.
“Tadaima!” he called as he opened the door, slipping off his bookbag and padding into the kitchen.
“Huh,” he muttered, peering around the doorframe. “Wonder where dad went.” Shrugging, he returned to the living room, where Yukito was sitting on the couch like usual, head cocked curiously.
“Dad’s not around. He must’ve gone out for a bit,” Touya explained. “I’ll make the tea.” Yukito joined him in the kitchen, setting out some sweets on a plate.
Touya was fidgety as they sat sipping tea and eating snacks. There was no one here. He should take this chance now, before his father got home and they would have to risk being caught, even in the privacy of his room.
Well, there was someone here, but he was probably upstairs occupied with pudding and/or video games. And Touya wasn’t supposed to know about him anyway.
“Yuki.” It was all it took to get Yukito’s complete and undivided attention. With those amber eyes fixed on him, Touya leaned forward slightly, slowly, worried about-of all the things!-their noses hitting each other uncomfortably if he got too close too quickly. When he felt stable enough he reached up with one hand, the tips of his fingers gently tipping Yukito’s chin upwards... His eyes closed instinctively…
“Tadaima!”
Their bodies jerked in surprise, and this time they did hit each other, noses colliding unceremoniously and painfully.
“Sorry, Touya, I needed to go out to pick up some things for dinner. Tsukishiro-san is staying, right?” Fujitaka asked, apparently oblivious to his son and his son’s best friend sitting just a little closer than usual on the couch rubbing their noses.
-----
Touya could not, for the life of him, concentrate on homework. He didn’t even know what homework Yukito thought he was doing, let alone be able to actually do it. Blissfully ignorant, Yukito’s pencil continued to scritch-scratch across his paper, Yukito humming every so often as he worked.
They were alone in his room. This would be a good time. No one was around, and his father always knocked and waited before coming in. He was also not inclined to disturb his son except for when dinner was ready, and that shouldn’t be for another hour at least.
“To-ya, what did you get for number 153?”
Touya blinked and looked down at the book in his lap. It was a literature book. And there was no way that someone had managed to think up 153 questions for a story.
“Uh, sorry, Yuki, what homework are you looking at?”
“Math,” Yukito replied softly, setting his book and paper down. “To-ya? Are you okay? Do you want to take a break, or a nap?”
No, I just want to kiss you, was the fleeting thought that ran through Touya’s brain.
Instead he shook his head and joined Yukito on his bed, flopping down gracelessly with a heavy sigh. He patted the space beside him and shifted over to make room for Yukito. Yukito obliged and lay down beside him, staring at his rather uninteresting ceiling. Oddly enough, a nap sounded good. Really good. His eyelids felt heavy at the prospect, and, with a yawn, he rolled over.
“I guess a nap,” he mumbled.
“Do you want me to get the futon?” Yukito asked. Of course. Yukito would nap with him. It was a sweet gesture that made Touya all the more aware of how much he loved Yukito.
“Too tired…”
-----
He woke up with a start, eyes blinking rapidly. The room had gotten darker, and he glanced at his bedside clock over the curve of Yukito’s shoulder to see that it was nearly dinnertime. Sighing with relief, he lay back down, studying Yukito’s languid, sleeping form.
He was lying on his side, curled, his face much closer to Touya’s than he’d noticed when he first woke. His hands were tucked beneath his head, and his legs were crossed at the ankles. He looked small and vulnerable, and Touya was seized by a disturbingly strong protective urge.
His breathing was soft and even, and his lips were slightly parted.
Touya knew if he didn’t do it now, he’d lose his nerve. The house was still quiet, so it wasn’t close enough to dinner that Sakura had left her homework. There would be none of this awkward business with eyes open or height difference or noses.
Taking a deep breath, he hovered above Yukito’s face, then lowered himself to kiss the soft lips-
“Nii-chan! Yukito-san!”
Today was the one day Sakura didn’t have the decency to knock and then pause before throwing the door open to invite them down to dinner.
Touya flung himself backward and away from Yukito’s prone body as Sakura’s shrill greeting woke Yukito, who sat up and rubbed his bleary eyes.
“Otousan made oden!” she cried, dancing in the doorway.
“We’ll be down in a moment,” Yukito told her, reaching for his glasses. Completely enamored with the thought of the tasty soup dish, she nodded and drifted away, singing lightly the whole time.
She failed to comment, therefore, on the fact that her brother and her brother’s best friend had been sharing a bed.
-----
“The world hates me,” Touya muttered, sinking down, defeated, onto the couch. Foiled three times in less than seven hours! He sighed and leaned his head against the back of the couch, closing his eyes.
“Why?” Yukito asked, and Touya’s eyes flew open and his body jerked to attention.
He contemplated the question as Yukito sat down beside him, settling cross-legged on the couch.
Well, let’s see. I tried to kiss you at lunch, then Akizuki showed up and talked about us doing things that, while I would love to do them, I don’t think we should do before we’ve kissed. Then I tried when we got home, but dad showed up, and… I do not want my father, as much as I love him, to be privy to our first kiss. And last, I tried to kiss you while you were sleeping, but my little sister barged in, and I definitely didn’t want her to watch us kiss in my bed. My bed!
He didn’t think that would go over well with Yukito, who would probably laugh and tease him. Though in the end, it might get him what he wanted…
“Well, I’m sorry the world hates you. But I love you.” And with that, Yukito leaned over and kissed him.
Touya blinked several times. Then he looked at Yukito. Then he blinked again. Then he pinched himself. Then he looked around for Sakura’s friend Tomoyo, certain she was in the room video taping them.
“Come on,” Yukito urged, standing and tugging at Touya’s hand. Touya was still processing the whole kiss thing as he let Yukito lead him upstairs. He could hear Sakura and his father in the kitchen washing dishes, and he wondered why they weren’t swarming the hallway to catch them doing… whatever it was they were doing.
Scratch that. There are things your father and little sister aren’t supposed to see, and you and your best friend making out on your bed isn’t one of them.
-----
“’s not fair,” Touya mumbled sleepily, rolling over and pulling the sheets around him, reaching for Yukito’s warmth. There was a reason he didn’t normally sleep naked, but right about now he was too damn tired to care.
“What isn’t?” Yukito murmured indulgently, pressing himself against Touya’s body, resting his head on Touya’s shoulder.
“No one was there when you kissed me.”
Yukito laughed. “I tried to make certain of that, yes.”
“Well, every time I tried to kiss you, someone interrupted…”
Touya couldn’t see Yukito’s smirk.
“Well obviously, the world wanted me to be on top.”
