today my mother was watching 2001: a space odyssey and i remembered that i wrote a short "prologue" to the book for a science fiction course i took a while back about how HAL came to be able to lie to his shipmates about the truth of their mission. alas, i thought to myself, surely the story is lost-- the hard drive in which it rested
