I don't think it's a selfish rant at all! I don't know why your dad thought yelling at you would somehow magically kick you into gear or something, that's just strange.
It's hard to be happy for friends when you both want the same thing and they're the ones getting it! I hope you can find something soon and things won't be so stressful. *hugs*
