just not a big zombie fic fan

The reading group that I am part of (which some of you are part of) is voting on books now. There seems to be general interest in reading World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, but I have to say that this book is my absolute last choice for a reading group. I enjoy the occasional zombie film, but I am generally not a big fan of "horror ( Read more... )

You know, you'd think I'd be at a distinct advantage by having formed the group from people I know (at least online), but there's a pretty popular book on that list that I'm almost certainly not going to read if it's voted for. You see, having never read anything by James Tiptree Jr, I consider it kind of lame to read about Alice B Sheldon. *shrug* I expect most people will be disenchanted with one or two books per year.

FYI World War Z now scores +6 and James Tiptree Jr scores +11. I don't think World War Z will make it on the list unless it manages at least 4 points from the straggling voters.

At first, I felt the same way about the James Tiptree/Alice Sheldon book, but then I thought it might be interesting to read about a female author in the 60's writing for a mostly male driven genre. In any case, I hope you aren't offended that I would post this. It's not meant to be a reflection on anyone's taste, just a comment that I was surprised it was ranked so highly when I would have rated it lower if I had the chance. In any case, I'm excited the first book! :)

If I were offended by my friends having different tastes from me I'd have dictated the reading list. ;)

And really, World War Z is probably going to be less discussion-worthy than the James Tiptree book. I didn't expect World War Z to be as popular as it was (is? I just got back and haven't checked the latest counts)....I actually just nominated a semi-diverse subset of my wishlist to see what people would go for. Maybe a little heavy on dystopias because I'm a sucker for discussions about human nature.

Hmm... You should read something by James Tiptree--her SF (that which I've read at least) is quite good and very prescient. That said, I'm interested in both WWZ and the Tiptree book!
