Problems with LJ feed size on IJ

Aug 09, 2007 09:32

I'd set up a number of syndicated feeds on InsaneJournal to LJ communities, and for some reason the newsletters were all not coming through whereas other communities were (usually quite quickly). I put in a support request about it and received the following ( Read more... )

If this is mostly happening with newsletters I think it may not be that much of a problem. Most of the newsletters will probably end up (or at least mirror their content) whereever fandom decides to go so there would be less need to RSS them. But it is still interesting to know.

I'm not entirely sure that it is happening with only the newsletters. Those stood out to me because they hadn't updated even once in several days. Since most post once a day this made it really obvious nothing was happening.

It could be that only some posts from the other feeds are coming through, but I wouldn't know that without going and checking each community individually. Also since I made that post the same thing has happened with someone's journal here on LJ.

It's definitely not just happening with the newsletters. I've created feeds for a bunch of individual users, and they're not working because they're 'Too big.'

Of course, the downside to doing this is that anyone reading the feed with their own RSS readers will no longer get full article text either. (Unfortunately, Livejournal's RSS support isn't exactly great.)

Yeah, it surprises me that that's the problem because it seems to me that some newsletter posts like those at the su_herald just aren't that big whereas I'm getting posts from other communities with giant images and such. I'm not sure how the size is actually the problem.

The image data isn't sent with the rest of the post data-- only the image tag is, and that's plain HTML and not very large.

Ah, no wonder. Thanks.

Well...not sure if you're looking for a solution, but if you are, standalone feedreaders are probably the way to go? I'm on firefox, so I use news fox (pretty good, in my opinion; it draws 25 posts per day per feed), and helps me consolidate all my journal readings (I'm on four sites, so filing them neatly helps me see at a glance who updated) really quickly, so I don't need to go to ten places unless I've gotten news otherwise.

It's really pretty cool. ^^

Thanks for the tip, it does sound handy. The problem though is that I'm trying to set up the feeds so groups can have access to them there, and so that I can make sure my own community can get through on the feed. As I still have an LJ I can always just come read my flist here :>

Oh...in that case I imagine it'll be a bit of a problem.

I have to confess, it's a bit of a pain then. Because heck, telling people "Oh, just sign up for an LJ account to get this on your friends list and view it there" hardly sounds optimal.

YES YES, this is exactly what I was looking for! Christ, I have been combing the internet for days.

OK. I'm trying to set up a feed for the LJ SPN newsletter AND a handful of LJ users over on IJ - they all say 'Too big.' So for the spnnewsletter, can I just go to the link above and put in "set for spnnewslettercomm synlevel summary" or whatever it takes to get the kb size down?

Do you know what it takes for individual users? 'exampleuser'? Or just their username?

Thank you SO MUCH for this. I love you a little bit right now.

p.s. I'm trying to create feeds for JF and I'm running into the same problems you found.

No problem. I ran into this for the same reason. You may want to join the Roadhouse on IJ as I posted this announcement there also because I'd already tried setting up a feed for the newsletter with the same result.

Yes, you should just be able to substitute username for the community name.

Sorry to come in so long after this post had died out, but I found it via google.

I have a journal on LJ and a journal on IJ, and many of my friends have put the feed to my IJ on their LJ friends list. I put it on mine, too.

I'm getting the "too big" error, and can't figure out which admin console to go to. When I go to LJ's, it lets me change xie_xie_xie to "summary," but that should only affect a feed of my LJ TO IJ, not my IJ to LJ, right?

When I try to use my IJ feed name which is xieinsane, it says there is no such user.

When I try to use the admin console at IJ, it tells me that I am not an administrator of the community xie_xie_xie (that's not a community, it's my IJ and I'm logged in), and when I use the feed name, it says "that is not a community."

If anyone can suggest how I can make sure my feed FROM InsaneJournal TO LiveJournal is not "too big," I'd be very grateful!

Thanks,

Xie

I have no idea if it matters, but the feed name is insanexie, not xieinsane.

This is the page with the "too big" message...

http://syndicated.livejournal.com/insanexie/profile

It says I haven't updated in SIX DAYS, which is clearly not true as I update multiple times a day, and some of my posts are very short.

Good question, I haven't tried it in reverse, sending an IJ feed to LJ. I would have thought it worked the same way but from what you're saying perhaps it isn't. Have you put in a support request for that at IJ?

I just just heard from both LJ and IJ about this, so for future reference, feel free to spread this around anywhere ( ... )
