ETA: Let's try this again. If you're not a member of fandom and you're not going to be voting for one of the ten people we are discussing, go somewhere else to discuss your candidate. I want this comments section on-topic. I have no desire to wade through anything extraneous in this community ( Read more... )

[Copypasta'd from my own LJ]

In regards to the inception of [info]fandom_votes:

What does being "fandom" (hey, didn't even know that was an adjective until today) have to do with being qualified to serve on the LJ Advisory Board?

I like stuff. Does that make me "fandom" of said stuff? Do I need to know a secret handshake? If I dress up like HR Pufunstuf and write slashfic based on Enoch the Sleestak/Sigmund the Sea Monster does that get me in the club, and somehow make my voting bloc more significant?

[info]jameth is penis fandom, I guess. Or anus fandom. Depends on his mood and what [info]asphaltwanderer and he sort out in bed; it's not my bailiwick either way. Regardless, one's hobbies or proclivities have no bearing on what makes a person the best candidate for the position being voted for.

Someone kindly explain this to me. Use small words, big words, just no Cyrillic because I can't read that.

Because FANDOM IS SRS BIZNESS. Also, because fandom wants their God-given right to angsty Harry/Snape smutfic and are afraid that jameth will mock them for it.

I also think fandom has their panties in a knot because jameth has a huge fandom himself, but at least he wouldn't invoke the ToS if RPS of him and goatse man showed up.

And no, the HR Pufunstuf thing doesn't count because he's not a hot guy. Although the slashfic gets you points.

dear god, fandom has made me bitter

I think a better place to debate the pros and cons would be bigdecision08 that recommendation created for talking about all the candidates. Thank you.

Fans make up a huge base of active LJ users. It the place a lot of fans call home. So naturally, they would like to have a say in how it's run ... and be represented by someone who actually understands them.

You might be a fan, but being in fandom (it's not really an adjective, it's a noun. Adjective = fannish!) basically means that you're involved in the community. Either you participate in discussions, go to cons, read or write fanfiction, draw or collect fanart, make fanmixes, cosplay, make macros, whatever. It doesn't even matter what you do, it's more just that you identify with them as a group.

This doesn't really have to do with people voting for people with similar interests as them. It has more to do with them wanting someone who understands the community, knows what it's concerned about, and will try to get LJ to understand it, so that fans don't get attacked again like we have in the past.

no need to worry about how youre perceived - if you report fairly, youve done your job, and whatever anyone says, well, they cant fight the truth.

you know what im saying?

Hi.

Actually, one glance at Fandom Wank suggests that it does matter. But it's a moot point. I'll have some time this weekend to fool around but I have a 25-page proposal due in two weeks, a 15-page paper due shortly after that, and then I have finals. I simply won't have time.

I don't know how it's possible to have a reasoned debate about which candidate to support if we're not allowed to say anything negative, so I'm hoping that there's some latitude there, and what you really mean to say is "if you want to say candidate x is a disgusting pervert who takes money from Jack Abramoff, do it somewhere else," and not that we can't bring up anything non-positive here, because ( ... )

Thanks for your response.

We're not having a debate on all candidates; this is limited to a specific few and their platforms and yes, we prefer non-negative campaigning. We can get that in the actual presidential elections and it's kind of exhausting.

I couldn't agree more! ;D The thing is, though, how do we balance that with the need to make information available to voters? If some of that information is negative (i.e., her defense of LJ during Strikethrough), I'm not sure we should blame the messenger. It runs the risk of appearing to protect legomymalfoy by not allowing the ramifications of her candidacy to be discussed. (I share kenboy's concern about electing a member of the Abuse Team to represent us, and I would hope this would be an acceptable topic for discussion.)

I think talking about the suitability of alternate candidates would a better idea, to be honest, rather than talk about the unsuitability of one of them. In the long run, negativity sets off hard feelings and it's too easy in fandom to blow it out of proportion later into grudges. No one's denied or hidden the fact lego is working at a job where one her job requirements is to handle lj abuse infractions, including deleting accounts that she is told don't match TOS. I can totally understand people having a big problem with it, or having reservations (I'm a member of pornish-pixies and had a couple of people on my fof who vanished during, as well as acquaintances: not a happy time). But we do want to keep it clean here, so an alternate would be to emphasize the electibility and good traits of an alternate candidate.

I'm supporting rm because her position post is extremely articulate and very clearly outlines precisely my own concerns and desires regarding LJ.

I support her because she has not been a member of the LJ staff, during strikethrough, boldthrough, or any other kerfuffle, but she does have good rapport with staff members.

I don't want our board member to have been on the LJ staff during a time when LJ was dicking us around. I have no confidence in the staff from those periods.

rm is a smart, passionate, articulate professional, and I believe she has the ability and the guts to be an effective board member. I believe she is the best qualified of the candidates, and I support her 100%.

I realize this is not approved fandom voting order, and late to the party to boot, but I'm throwing in behind vichan. I put up a post in my journal; I'll copy the relevant bit here:

This whole crazy mess, which has now gotten *even crazier*, has been looking like an unfortunate test-case of "so, candidate, how do *you* handle it when LJ explodes with drama?" And vichan has been consistently level-headed, fair, rational, and responsive. Which is exactly how I want my LJ drama handled, and qualities that I'd love to see on the Advisory Board. Her platform stresses communication, I think we can all agree that LJ users like to hear wtf is going on and have their concerns heard, and her campaign has, I believe, demonstrated that these are in fact skills that she possesses and uses!
