"Well, we've all survived," Jono intoned, looking around at the people who had gathered for the rehearsal today. "And just in the nick of time, too. I know the Nothing did a fair bit of eating into our rehearsal time, but the show is scheduled for Friday, tickets are on sale, and so help me, we're going to have something to show for this ( Read more... )

After talking to Dinah yesterday, Karla realized that time in Warren's world was going a lot slower. Which, technically, she'd known, but she hadn't actually thought of how it might affect things until that call.

And so now, praying that she wasn't waking him up at like four in the morn--wait. It was Jono. Ha! Sleeping.

Karla was calling now. Ringringring

"Heeeey!" Karla protested. Unfair! "When we left, we didn't know anything about Magneto being involved. Or cure treatment facilities! Or anything else I'm in trouble for!"

"CURE FACILITIES?"

Yell a little louder, Jonothon.

"What kind of bloody cure are we talking about, here!?"

"See?"

"Hush, Bobby!"

"Next time I'm texting you," Karla informed him. "And I'm sure you can guess what kind of cure. If it were a cure for cancer, would we be having this talk right now?"

"Wonderful. Brilliant. Great. So now you're a pack of mutants and one bloody Queen running headlong into a place that can make most of you not be mutants anymore, to face not one, but two Omega-level mutants while attempting to break into Alcatraz."

JONO WAS SEEING ISSUES HERE.

"And you were all expecting to come out of this alive."

He had to make certain he was getting this right, here.

"Logan says he has a plan!" Karla retorted. However, had she known how COMPLETELY STUPID Logan's plan was going to be, she might have been siding with Jono. "And I can shield people! Warren's already wearing a shield."

She moved the phone away from her mouth and said, "Oh, yeah. I can shield you all from the darts, probably. Warren, explain?"

"I'm not going in as a Queen," she informed Jono. "I'm going in as a Sapphire-Jeweled witch, the second-most powerful of my generation."

"Wonderful. Let's see how much good that does you against Jean Grey, eater of suns, and Magneto, who can turn every scrap of metal near him against you with practically no effort at all. Logan should have fun with that one. You could probably stick those alphabet fridge magnets to his forehead, if you felt like doing so."

... And it would be hilarious until he stabbed you in the face for it.

"I don't think he's appreciate that," Karla said quietly. And then, seeing Warren was still trying to explain her powers she murmured into her phone. "What else can they do? Do you think Warren will just accept his father's death? Logan--I think the mutant they're using to synthesize the cure--I think that's Leech. The labs have him--and I think Magneto's going to kill him."

Leech. Little bald boy, less green than the versions she'd met, but still just a boy. A child. Were they supposed to just hand him over with a bow?

Sorry, Karla. Jono just needed a moment, now, to slam a fist down, hard, into a stack of sheet music. God damn it, did every bloody mad scientist out there who wanted to nullify mutant powers just hunt down Leech and keep him locked away? Was this some sort of great bloody multiversal trend that was all the rage these days?

"I think if that man hurt that boy in any way whatsoever..." He swallowed the rest of that. There wasn't much of a point in making threats. With Magneto on hand, there wasn't much of a chance that the Worthington man would come through alive anyhow. "So, you're the only one in the jet who is immune to both the cure they're throwing around and the source of it. Karla, save that boy."

And if it came at the cost of the old man who was using him as a lab rat, so be it. But Jono didn't say that part, either.

He didn't have to. Karla heard the message anyway. Darkness help her if she had to make that choice. Because she didn't think she could look Warren in the eyes ever again if she let his father die.

But she'd never be able to face herself if she sacrificed Leech instead.

"I'm probably going to miss dress rehearsal," she said instead. "But I'll try my damndest to be there for the show. Apologize to Elphaba for me?"

Jono sighed. The last thing he was worried about now was the show. There were enough people here who, if they didn't know their roles off by heart, were willing to fake it. They'd get by.

"Naturally. And... Be careful, Karla. Please."

"I'll be as careful as I can be," Karla said, leaving off the part about 'facing down an Omega-level mutant terrorist.' Dinah hadn't seemed to appreciate that point when she'd asked for the promise. "We just tangled with the Nothing, Jono. I'm in no hurry to stop existing yet."

"I'll believe that when you turn yer arse around and head back," Jono mumbled, shaking his head. He was going to need a drink tonight. "If you need any help at all, call me. I'll beat the hell out of whoever I need to at that new office in town in order to get there, okay?"

... Please don't bring up that he had no powers. That wouldn't go over well.

Hey. Karla was crap at diplomacy, bur she wasn't deliberately cruel.

"I will," she promised. "And thank you. If I need you, I'll call."

She was just going to have a very narrow definition of 'need' was all.

"Good," Jono sighed. "Thank you."

He'd met Karla. He really wasn't going to start holding his breath.

That had worked so much better as a saying before M-Day.

"All right, Jono, we're getting close," Karla said. "I've gotta go talk strategy. I'll be fine, okay? And I'll get Leech out. You've got my word on that."

However much that meant right now.

"Bye, Jon. Don't let Raven worry too much, okay?"
