The air-conditioning at Portalocity was on the fritz today, leaving the office quite a bit hotter than the temperature outside. Sam fiddled with the machinery after a while -- it was hot, and her uniform was rather heavy and made it even hotter -- but it didn't seem to budge. Naturally, she called a technician, who would apparently be here... at

That was a... paraphrased version of the script she'd been told to memorize for customer service interactions on her first day here. It was much nicer than the official script.
"What's been the trouble?"

She dropped her voice to a lower, slightly... friendlier tone and leaned forward just a tiny bit. "See," she said, confidingly, "here's the thing. You know that whole deal a couple of years ago, giant multiversal crisis, worlds getting cut off and all that? Mine got cut off for way longer. Months afterward. When I finally got through, the rep I talked to said they'd make sure I got properly compensated for the hassle. But you know, when I get stranded in some gross floating tin can for a couple of days and have to Major Tom it 'cause my portal got cancelled on me? Not really feeling the compensation ( ... )

"Well, I'll see what I can do about that," Sam said, already indignant on Kennedy's behalf. "When and where would you like to go?"

She should probably behave herself, but it'd been a while, and it was fun.

Oh. She blinked. Oh.
God, she really was out of practice, wasn't she?
"Now that you mention it, I should have guessed that you were going somewhere tropical," Sam noted, sounding a little more... familiar now. "You obviously get a lot of sun. No wonder the 'floating tin can' was so unpleasant for you."

"Well," she said, drawing out the word as long as possible, "thing is, it's winter in Brazil right now, but I don't usually let little things like that stop me if I'm..."
She paused and grinned, having decided it would be fun to play the old game of seeing if she could get someone to blush. Just for a few minutes. Look, it worked on Willow, but she never knew if that was just because of familiarity by now.
"Really into something, you know?"

"Really now?" she said, leaning in more. "Well, you must be quite determined if you're finding sun in the dead of winter. I have to commend your dedication."
Her omni-tool lit up with a notification and Sam glanced down at it.
"Look at that," she said. "One complimentary first-class ticket to Sao Paulo."

"Just like that, huh? Color me impressed, you're good at what you do." She waggled her eyebrows again, and okay, maybe she'd better ease up on the flirting before she really got herself in trouble. "Any other future perks I can look forward to?"
...okay, now she'd better ease up, for real.

Okay, so she was showing off now. But look, she didn't get that many customers here who were pleasant when they were complaining, and she did have quite a few of these vouchers to give away. So why not?

Also she still thought it was the least she ought to get.
"...god, if I'd known the service was gonna be so... pleasant, I'd have come here in the first place instead of bitching over the phone."
Kennedy. Stop it.

Aha.
"Gotcha."
Yeah, she looked pretty triumphant, even pumping one fist a few inches into the air. "And you're welcome to it," she added playfully, "but I may have to make 'having a drink with me' a term of acceptance."

"Tempting," Kennedy said, and she was genuinely apologetic about it even if she couldn't quite drop the flirtatious demeanor yet. "Really tempting, I gotta say, but..."
Why did she have a feeling that she'd be sleeping on the couch for a month at least if she accepted, even innocently? Because she was finally starting to figure out what about her extradimensional trips got under Willow's skin, that was why.
Kennedy sighed. "Full disclosure, I have a girlfriend. Who's... kinda waiting at home for me."

"She'll appreciate it. I appreciate it. We, um, had a date planned, and then I got stuck on that space station," she said, more serious now. "Which, not the first time me and portals have given her a reason to freak out."
She paused, looked thoughtful, and conceded, "Not all of those freakouts are on you guys, though."
