Jim's previous night had been excellent, thank you. And now he was getting treated to free food and drinks? Most excellent even if he still felt like he hadn't completely worked out all the itchiness.

Still, he was out there, enjoying the sun after having been so cold in class earlier.

He was also being treated to a deeply unimpressed look from the one person there to see him. Don't you feel lucky, Jim? Don't you?

"Enjoying yourself?"

Why had a shiver just run down his back? Weird.

"Always," he said without even thinking about it. "Who wouldn't enjoy themselves with this spread?"

He stood up a little straighter though.

Christopher looked from the assembled group of people who wouldn't have turned too many heads at the academy back to Jim out of the corner of his eye. "Yeah. I can see that."

Okay, some of the people looked like they were dressed for a play. There. He thought it.

"You want me to go get you some bacon wrapped hot dogs?" Jim offered because he kind of wanted to step away from this guy for some reason he couldn't pin down.

"They're really good," he added.

Could have been the military bearing. Or maybe the unimpressed looks he was giving Jim.

Or maybe the fact that he wasn't leaving like a normal person would when starting small talk with a supposed stranger. "I think I'm good without. But go right ahead, Mr. Kirk."

Jim narrowed his eyes at this guy knowing his name.

"Who the hell are you?" he asked accusingly. "If you're a stalker, I gotta tell you, that blonde over there is security and she looks seriously bored. She'd be happy to haul you out."

Look how scared he was of that threat. You just look.

"My name is Captain Christopher Pike." Well, guessing just what organization that rank was associated with wasn't hard, right?

Jim stared.

"From Starfleet?" Yeah, he could figure Pike was from Starfleet but he had to hear it confirmed because how in the hell did someone track him down here?

Did he really think with his family history they'd just ignore him? Well, okay, they mostly did.

But not Chris.

"From Starfleet," he replied dryly. "And I'm sure you can guess why I'm here."

"You say one word about my father, I'm going to start screaming 'stranger danger' as loud as I can."

Because that was super mature.

Yeah, that got him a look that wondered just where things went so wrong with Jim. Other than that timeline alteration.

"Stop looking at me like that," Jim said because a part of him felt like a failure. "How did you even get an invitation? Wouldn't they have sent one to my mom?"

Well, then the look was working. "And here I am instead."

"And why the personal interest, Pike?" He ignored the 'captain' part on purpose, yes.

He was a rude kid like that. So, so rude.

"Because I know you can do better than this."
