I received the Nook Simple Touch for Christmas and now I'm trying to figure out how to load a free book from BN to the Nook. So far this is what has happened

I hope someone will answer your question for you (I'm a Kindle user myself) ... but just in case not, you can always visit the Nook forum on the MobileRead site. If you can't find the exact answer there, just register with MobileForum (it's free) and post the question. Lots of helpful people there!
Thank you :) I'll bookmark it for future reference. I think I stumbled upon how to upload by accident. Problem is I don't know if I can do it again, lol
I don't have a Nook but I use Nook for PC to read Nook freebies. When I plug in my Sony it offers to connect to it, so I'm wondering if it will connect natively to the Nook and be very easy.
I'm watching for a simple answer too, because I'm helping my mother manage her Nook. It is definitely possible to transfer B&N books by drag and drop. I know we managed to figure out the drag and drop for her, but that was weeks ago and I can't remember how it is done. We spent maybe ten minutes figuring it out and a lot of that time was searching for the answer while she did the mousing and typing. My vague recollection is that it should go to the My Files folder and there's no special trick to it, but I can't remember if there was anything special she had to do to see them on the Nook.
I definitely second the Mobile Read recommendation. I've started going there and doing a search in the forums when I want to know anything and I usually find the answer.
I have a Nook Color and usually whenever I get books from B&N (whether they be freebies or purchased). I just turn on the wi-fi on my Nook and automatically download it, so I don't have to worry about the drag and drop. You don't really need to worry about keeping backup copies of your purchased/free books from B&N on your computer, as they stay in your library at B&N and you can redownload them at any time.
If you really want to do the drag and drop, you should be able to drag it from whatever folder to your My Documents folder on your Nook, I believe. Then it should pop up. If that doesn't work, PM me....I'll hook my Nook up to my computer and see if I can recall step by step how to do it. :)
I don't think Adobe Digital Editions will work on purchased books because of the DRM. I mostly use that when I borrow e-books from my local library to put on my Nook.
I have a tutorial on how to create ebooks using Calibre (that seriously needs updating to be fair) it's here: Ebook Formatting Tutorial
The hard part for me when I was learning how to use calibre was the conversion process. But if you already have the ebook you can just drag and drop the ebook into the Calibre window. Then plug in your device and use the transfer to device button...It may not hurt to read the Calibre Manual if you want to know what each button does. The manual has screencaps.
I'm going to bookmark this. I never had the ebook part, I just couldn"t figure how to put someone's fic onto my Nook because right now that's what I'm using it for. Hopefully this will help me.
