Outside a UCLA off-campus apartment building, really late Sunday night

Two hours in a car with Kristine.

Two hours in a car with Kristine, who was drunk and kept either nodding off or sobbing about how much she missed Don- Jaye could have sworn the bf's name was Dan- and even the cab driver kept reminding them that the meter was running and that he didn't have all night. If it wasn't for the fact that her lion in her purse kept telling her to get her home, she'd have ditched her about eight times by now. It wasn't like Kristine was a friend. More like a one night only drinks sugar momma.

Kristine happened to be a sobbing mess when the cab hung a left onto Hilgard, and then she was a sobbing mess yelling "HERE HERE THIS IS IT."

"Oh thank god," Jaye sighed, though she was debating tossing the lion into the road for tonight's outcome. Also, she was sort of feeling really sober now, thanks Kristine.

Drunkie over there kept fumbling with her purse, so Jaye took it to get the credit card, and while she was handing it over, sheheard Kristine say, "Dan?" And a second later the door was opening to sort of let her spill onto the sidewalk.

"So close," Jaye said, putting the purse down on the seat and opening her own door. "Stay right here, I promise I'm easy. Um. Not like that."

When she came around to the other side of the car to help Kristine up, because the ultimate cap to her night would be trying to get this girl she hardly knew into her apartment building and have to answer questions from roommates, she hard a guy say, "Kristine?"

She looked up to see what definitely looked like a college freshman boy heading over from the steps of one of the buildings to come over and help Jaye. "I'm guessing you're Don," she greeted him.

"Dan," he corrected. "What happened?"

Considering all the crying that had been happening, and the mascara causing the ultimate in nighttime raccoon looks, Kristine should have wept and glomped and been so happy to see him. Instead, what came out was, "I'LL TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED, YOU LEFT, YOU BASTARD. WHAT DID YOU EXPECT ME TO DO?"

"Well, if you hadn't tried to hook up with my roommate, I wouldn't have had to leave, would I?" he shot back.

"I WAS NOT FLIRTING WITH DON. I JUST FELL INTO HIS LAP."

Jaye was pretty sure she had some payback to serve to karma for this. She poked Dan on the shoulder with one finger and awkwardly passed the wobbly-but-belligerant drunk girl to him. "Your turn now," she said, and headed back to the cab.

When she got in, she said, "Now the Hyperion." And as the car started off, she picked up her phone just to see if she had any messages. And then there was frowning, and calling back, and then a little bit of cursing as she realized that she was going to have to pay for this whole thing out of her own pocket-

And then her eyes fell on Kristine's purse, still in the backseat where she left it. Sometimes karma could be good to her.
