Composition help

Can one of you wonderful francophiles read my composition and tell me if there's anything glaringly wrong in it? We're supposed to be focusing on the verb tenses, which I'm pretty sure I butchered, but I also need just general agreement, and if you have a suggestion for rewording something, it would be much appreciated. I should probaby add that this is for a 202 class, and I have very much given up at this point.

1. check your genders and agreements
2. accents are not optional in french so make sure you know where they go! :)
3. you used present tense a lot where you needed passé composé
4. quelquefois = sometime, parfois = sometimes
5. don't capitalize language names. language names and countries always need articles.
6. after conjunctions, you have to repeat any articles and prepositions. annoying i know :/
7. put spaces inside french quote marks. also around colons, question marks, and exclamation marks
8. some verbs change meaning depending on whether they're reflexive or not, so be careful there.
9. plus means more, use beaucoup to say a lot

La République du Tchad est une ancienne colonie de la France, située en Afrique. Elle a gagné son indépendence en 1960. Elle s’appelle parfois la << couer morte d’Afrique >>, à cause de sa faible économie et de ses citoyens pauvres.

Les langues officielles du Tchad sont le français et l'arabe. La devise du Tchad est << Unité, Travail, Progrès >>. La population est estimée à 10,780,600 personnes ( ... )
