This might lose its bite across languages, but calling someone a "retard" is actually *extremely* distasteful and disrespectful.

Well - i wasn't aiming at anyone particular with this post so i guess no one was harmed. But i know where you're coming from here, sorry if you found it offensive. I was merely amused by the picture that i haven't known yet.

But this is interesting of you to mention because when playing with my British friends we always say things like "You're such a tard" which might just originate from this word i guess. I have never found this word nearly as offensive as it simply translates into something like "very silly person" in German.

Yeah, in English it refers to someone with a mental handicap, and when used in jest as an offensive remark, is quite ableist. It's kind of like a slur. I didn't think you intended to offend anyone, (or rather, hurt anyone, as people don't tend to get offended by this stuff so much as hurt). I was so shocked that you posted it that I could only assume it was a translation thing.
