A Few Things, and a Question

So, my uni workload is finally easing up again (until June and the end-of-term Hell Week, anyway). It is Very Nice Indeed to be able to think about doing something other than OMG ASSIGNMENTS again. I still have one outstanding, for gender studies, but omg our teacher for that is so awesome. She was all 'yeah, it's due on Thursday, but you can hand ( Read more... )

Please specify the question: is "Yay" for "use it" or for "No-go" ??!! :-)

If the piece is accessible to anyone, meaning not flocked or in a restricted comm, in the absence of stated policy I would say use it and credit it, but be prepared to pull it down if asked.

If it's flocked or otherwise restricted, perhaps best to forgo it in absence of consent.

Congrats on the Margoyle success! Awesome. And I agree with Lash on the fanart.

Not sure what yay means - you were not too clear on the poll so I didn't vote. However, personally I wouldn't be too happy if someone took something I made, especially if I quit fandom, and you can never know why MIA: it can be RL problems, or illness, or even death, and then you'd have two opposite approaches to that: the one that says: "respect the artist by using their legacy and speading their talent", and the one that says: "repect the artist by leting them be and not violate their copyrights". Since in my own RL I was hurt by the first and I try to live by the latter, my advice to you would be to leave that be. If you want to show your work that uses that piece with friends, by email, in private, that's a different thing, because it's like making a cassette mix for a friend's birthday - totally harmless even if not exactly legal - but if you want to post it to the net, no matter how limited your audience is, I'd say that it's not 'right'.

As an artist I would have to say erron the side of caution. If you can't contact them or find a policy, don't use the art no matter how tempted you are.
