Meme fail. I haven't posted anything meme related since I came home from break. Whatever, here's day 4.
Day 4 - Favorite Male Ranger
1.Jason Scott (Original Red Ranger, Gold Zeo Ranger)
I like Jason for pretty much the same reasons I like Cedric Diggory: He's just generally an all-around good guy. He displayed plenty of bravery, loyalty, and strategic know-how. He was a wicked fighter, but could also relax and chill when not morphed. Jason, like the other original rangers, started out as a
stock character, but over the course of the series underwent character development.
In the very beginning,
Jason was clearly set up as the best fighter. He was well-trained in the martial arts, so much that he, as a teenager, was giving lessons to his peers in his free time. When chosen to be the first red ranger, he was the only one of the group willing to listen to Zordon, a giant floating head in a tube, and the first one to think of morphing when attacked by putties in the first episode. he genuinely wanted to make a difference and help people, and he jumped at the chance to save the world.
The first time Jason really got to shine was in the five-part 'Green With Evil' arc. Rita makes Tommy her evil green ranger, and the bad guys target Jason. At one point in the arc, Jason is trapped in Goldar's 'dark dimension' and fights both Goldar and the green ranger without the use of his morpher. Despite the intense battles between Jason and evil!Tommy, when the spell is broken, Jason is the first to extend a hand to Tommy, inviting him to join the team.
The Jason/Tommy friendship was one of the closest in Power Rangers history.
After the actors who played Jason, Zack, and Trini
left the show (everyone involved is always kind of vague about the situation, but it had something to do with money and unions), the characters were chosen to represent Angel Grove (and I assume America) in an international teen peace conference in Geneva halfway through season 2. Later, when the ratings for Zeo were slipping, the writers decided to
bring back his character to pull in viewers. He returned in 'A Golden Homecoming' and became the
Gold Zeo Ranger. I'm not quite as fond of him in gold as in red, but what's interesting is the relationship between Jason and Tommy. In the earlier seasons, Jason was the red ranger and team leader, and Tommy was the sixth ranger, but in Zeo that was flipped: Now Tommy was in charge and Jason was the
big damn hero. Eventually the gold ranger powers - never intended for humans - started to slowly kill Jason, and he had to return them to the original owner in Zeo ambiguous finale.
Jason shows up a couple more times, though. He and Kimberly appear in Turbo: a Power Rangers Movie, where they're brainwashed by Divatox and fight the rangers. Apparently, they kick ass. Later on, in the Wild Force 10th anniversary team-up, Jason is one of the ten red rangers that go on the mission to the moon (it makes sense in context - sort of). Not gonna lie, he's pretty badass.
2. Bridge Carson (SPD Green Ranger)
Bridge's appeal is kind of difficult to describe to people who have never seen SPD, so I looked around on YouTube for a short video with some of the his best moments from the season, but despite all my trying, I couldn't find one that really captures all his Bridgey goodness. Bridge is one of the few characters that generally well-liked throughout the fandom, and it's probably due to his delightful quirks. He's random and weird and way out there, but manages to stop short of being annoying, like some of the series' other characters that were meant to be 'quirky.' He's also
pretty competent on top of all his oddities, so that helps. And did I mention he's psychic?
Psychic powers definitely add to the awesomeness.
3. Adam Park (Second Black Ranger, Green Zeo Ranger, First Green Turbo Ranger)
A lot of fans (and Johnny Yong Bosch) comment on how Adam was a "background ranger" for the first couple seasons he was on the show, and say he didn't really get to do anything until Turbo. Actually,
the first two episodes after the power transfer are Adam-centric, and none of the rangers who came in seasons 2, 3, or Zeo got to do much of anything because it had already turned into
The Tommy Oliver Show featuring the Power Rangers. Regardless, I still really liked Adam, even through Turbo when he had that ridiculous long hair ("Just doesn't look good - curly hair on an Asian guy.") and I was really excited when he came back in Power Rangers In Space and Operation Overdrive.
Worst Ranger
Sam (SPD Omega Ranger)
Sam's the worst ranger not because of what was done with the character, but rather what wasn't done with him. The stock footage for SPD had seven rangers on the team, but the season was running over budget and
Disney refused to pay for another ranger. So they could use the stock footage of DekaBreak and his zord, they made the Omega ranger a time traveler who got stuck in a time warp and couldn't return to his real form. See that glowing ball on the left side of the picture/ That's what Sam looked like for almost all of his unmorphed appearances. He's briefly seen as a child early in the season, and in the finale he gets his his body back . . . just as he's returning to the future. He rarely interacts with the other characters, and he ends up being more like one of the rangers' weapons than a teammate.
