switching food

Yesterday I tried switching my 9 month old kitten from Royal Canin kitten food to Evo. I had always read that the first three ingredients in cat food should be real meat, and I had never seen any food that met that. When I learned of Evo and how it is grain free and has all natural ingredients it just made sense and seemed like the healthiest ( Read more... )

If you have a Pet People near you, they'll give you free samples of different high quality cat foods. Currently my kitties are eating a mixture of Fromm and Evo.

All in all, the all meat cat foods will do your kitten no good if she won't eat them.

I would try mixing them at first and gradually adding more of the new, less of the old. Maybe 1/4 new, 3/4 old to begin, and keep adjusting the ratios until it's all the new brand. I think they probably get acclimated to the taste - lots of people love junk food, but that doesn't mean it's healthier, kwim?

It's definitely easier on their digestive track to transition to a new food over time by mixing it with the old.

Good luck!

Try telling my middle girl that. She refuses to eat if I don't give her what she likes - and will literally starve herself in the process. Because I give her sisters something different to her - that she doesn't like - she won't even steal their food if she's hungry! And she refuses to eat anything BUT Royal Canin (and here in Australia, it's one of the healthiest we can buy) and pure chicken mince. Damn fussy animal!

Try it for a while, and if she won't touch it when there's no other food available, try something else. There are a lot of premium foods out there.

One of my cats would rather starve himself than eat anything that's actually good for him, but I can usually trick him by mixing in something super-tasty but less quality, like Fancy Feast. He loves the Feast, and will eat whatever comes with it.
