I managed to locate the BBC article with statistics about the long-term economy. 'Borrowing set to soar in slowdown'. Now given that the government wrongly predicted how much they would need to borrow this year and that it is unlikely that govt. borrowing will drop off shortly, we could be in for a large deficit for a number of years

It's funny, as I read this entry of yours, I'm setting plans into motion to leave the US for the UK, feeling much the same.

Good point - I didn't actually think about the fact that all these redundanies will be meaning a decrease in tax payers. It makes me sick at the moment how much of my salary goes to the taxman!!
