Don't take this the wrong way, but how can a liberal-ish swinger not enjoy Henry Miller?

We all assimilate and become old and fat. Or just old.

PS Why Henry Miller? If I was having an identity crisis in law school this would not someone I would look to for advice (drugs, drunk, fornicating, wandering around, etc). Perhaps you should take up some of Camus philosophical works or something...Myth of Sisyphus might be a good starter.

What a strange response from Syphilis... felipemcguire June 8 2007, 16:54:07 UTC
Henry Miller is a self-obsessed git.

At least, he was when he wrote ToC.

Never said I didn't like the stuff he did. That sounded like a lot of fun.

Who said I'm having an identity crisis? I was just pissed off at Miller's masturbatory shit.

As for Sisyphus, dude, the wedge was invented for a reason. We invented wedges LONG before ancient Greece.

There is ALWAYS a wedge around. Hell, if I were Sisyphus, I'd be gnawing my own arm off to make a wedge.

Like fudge made with too much butter or expensive cheese made expensive by the sheer foulness of the mold and odor it exudes....

Yup.

Yeah...I kinda liked the lice too.

I had a hunch Miller would get a reaction out of you. ;-) Anyway, I adored how visceral Henry Miller was in this book and how unafraid he was to explore all the territories of his own psyche. He also managed to capture how making art has got to be one of the scariest, lonely as hell activities that there is.

Anyway, that's the short reply. Perhaps some nice Nabakov next?

That's exactly what he did, and I think it's why I got all ticked off. But, then, I have very particular thoughts on artists and such.

Nabakov, eh? I'm thinking I'm going to attempt Steinbeck's Arthur next, actually. But if this Nabakov guy is any good, I might toss him in the rubbish pile with Miller once I'm through with that.

Nabokov's "Ada" is one of my all-time favorite books. :)

Goddamnit. I was right there with you 'til the last thing you said, which completely obliterated the meaning of the rest of the entire rant for me as it took my mind in a single, unavoidable direction:

"Well, Zaphod, he's just this guy, you know?"

My mind is a fucking slave to that radio show.
