She’s been worrying over this moment all week, but her mind is made up and the time is here. Blanche Devereaux doesn’t stay home on Friday nights, but she has every night since Dorothy left them. Rose is watching her friend’s passion and excitement slowly shrivel away. It’s past time she took matters into her own hands.
Blanche looks up as she enters the living room. “Ready for movie night?”
Sophia’s still gone to the tracks with money Rose worked hard to procure but still gave away freely. “I’m ready for something all right.” Rose lifts her head and drops her robe. She gulps and shivers as she stands there, bare before the most beautiful woman she’s ever known.
Blanche promptly drops the popcorn. “R-Rose?” she whispers, but then she smiles, the first genuine smile Rose has seen light her beautiful face in weeks. She holds out her arms. “Honey, if you were lonely, ya only had to say so!”
Rose beams at her, but she doesn’t speak the truth. She doesn’t say that she wasn’t lonely but she knew Blanche was. She doesn’t call her on her need, but she gives herself freely all night long and for the coming days and nights as well. They’re both made happy and whole again through love, Dorothy’s absence no longer such a big hole in their world.
“No wonder you an’ Charlie did it so much, dahling,” Blanche whispers one night, but it’s with a smile, always with a smile now.
