Hungry Hummingbird

I completely forgot to bring in the hummingbird feeders last night, which is a bit of a problem with our temperatures dropping down to 20°F overnight. So, this morning I stumbled into the kitchen, glanced out the window and saw a feeder-cicle... with one poor little hummingbird hopping from perch to perch, hoping to find an unfrozen "flower ( Read more... )

Aww!

Also, I had no idea you got hummingbirds in winter. I thought they all flew down to Central/South America.

We pretty much have two different types of hummingbirds around here... Rufous Hummingbirds, which migrate south during the winter, and Anna's Hummingbirds who will generally just stick around. The ones who winter here tend to get really fuzzy, since they get those downy sorts of "under" feathers to help keep warm, and apparently will eat insects and tree sap if they can't find anyone with a birdfeeder. We're pretty sure we had at least one nest in our palm tree (which is within about 20 feet of that feeder... and at one point this last year, we had several really teeny hummingbirds start hitting the feeder) so I sort of feel obligated to keep feeding them.

Now I just need to remember to pull the feeder in at night and put it back out in the morning!

That's so interesting. I had no idea. You're somewhere in the Pacific North West, yes?

Birds definitely will give you "the eye" when they want food. We put out sunflower seeds and peanuts this time of year and Mr. Cardinal, Mr. Blue Jay and the sparrow gang will sit on our porch railing and glare until the food comes out.

That's a great photo btw.

I was hoping you'd actually be able to see the hummingbird... I was taking the photo through a rather dirty window and also trying to avoid reflections and glare. I wish I'd thought to get a photo of him staring at me, though. It was pretty funny.

I am amazed hummingbirds are still around and not in other warmer areas!
