Dusting Things Off

Earlier this year, with my 55th birthday fast approaching, I realized I had a wonderful opportunity to read one book published in each year of my life, sequentially, with the hopes of being done by the time I reach my 60th birthday (I have five years, which means just one a month, so I'm hoping to pull it off), starting with Year Zero (which ( Read more... )

*waves to you* welcome back to Lj! I'm on DW too as a back-up, but this is still my main home.

I like this book challenge better than the other one I saw recently on FB. I feel like I could do this one.... although, that would be a hell of a lot of books.... You and I seem like we might have similar tastes, so I may be using your posts for finding new books or authors. (after I wade through the piles on my nightstand and top shelf of my desk.....)

It actually started because a friend was talking about a similar challenge he had set up for himself for the same timespan (55-60), but in his case it was reading one thing published in each of the last 60 decades. I originally looking into doing that one and was a bit surprised by how many books were available from those earlier years (translated into modern English, even), but there were definitely some decades that were going to be duds... which got me thinking and eventually deciding to go with each year of my life, instead.

So far, I'm pretty happy with it. I've been able to find lists out on Good Reads and Wikipedia that are mostly correct (I had one glitch already for 1972... where the lists all said Jack of Shadows by Roger Zelazny was published that year, but the book itself says 1971), then I make smaller lists of books I actually want to read and pick something from there. I may look at posting those lists at some point, just for posterity and so that I can go back to find them later for more ideas on things to read.
