I'm 35 hours into Mass Effect 2 after importing my ME1 Shepard. I customized my Shepard to look like Bruce Willis from Live Free or Die Hard. I felt the default appearance was too youthful and smooth to be the seasoned war veteran, and eventually the commander that he should be. I'm having a blast with the game and have no major complaints.
I've always been disappointed by the customization options for a lot of games, but I assume that's the nature of making a huge epic story with heaps of options for how you play it. You have to cut back somewhere. Although, Fallout 3 seemed to be the best in regard to customization, AND huge, AND with heaps of options. Imagine my grave disappointment when I realized I couldn't recreate Grace Jones in Dragon Age, because every visual option has a Euro-centric range. Ah well... :3
I've been a bit spoiled by other games that have huge numbers of tweakable options and sliders for facial features. I can't even turn off Shephard's super-glam mascara and it just bugs me! For a game with this much close up face-time I'd think customization would be a higher priority. But yeah, besides that I can't complain much, they have fixed the worst of ME1 and added a lot more polish and content.
