Good point. It's only the first step to be paired with Michael. Because, really, EVERYONE gets paired with him. But it's an entirely new level when they start getting paired with others who aren't Michael. Then you know they're there for the long haul, because they broke into the rest of the group.
Mahone being an excellent example, indeed. In fact, while I probably won't be writing them myself, I've got a thing for Mahone/T-Bag (as I've mentioned) and Mahone/Whistler. I'd read either of those in a heartbeat. And with Mahone/Whistler, they're both newer characters, though Mahone is less so this season. But neither were introduced in season one, so it's a testament to their popularity. Except that Whistler is nowhere near as popular as Mahone, but he's still got time to win us all over.
It's one-sided, but it's Bellick/Michael. As for the others, huh. I feel like there should be some Michael/C-Note or Michael/Lechero somewhere, but I can't think of anyhting off the top of my head.
Ooh, thank you! I will definitely have to read that. I thought there's gotta be some Bellick/Michael somewhere, one-sided or not, but I hadn't ever seen any.

Level One: Be paired with Michael
Level Two: Be paired with people other than Michael, to show that their popularity doesn't depend on Michael
(for example people love Mahone so much that they are willing to write and read him in a variety of even non-canon pairings).
