What do you folks think is the three biggest ways women get gypped in our society? What do you think is the danger of this is?

Also that stat of women making 70% of what men make in the same position has been floating around for a while. Does anyone know what study that came from?

It's a patriarchal society still. Women get the shit end of pretty much every stick, unless it comes to child support. Then the guys get raped. (don't get me started on THAT whole thing)

I digress...
I think you know my view on where women get shafted. We've had that conversation...

For you: http://patchwolf.livejournal.com/217698.html

To answer Bren's question: i think that what hurts women more than anything else is actually fashion. No, really.

Basically, women are broken from a very young age and taught that they have to look a certain way or they're not pretty. And of course, most of them will never look like that even if they try. And (this goes without saying) tons of women are pretty, sexy, and otherwise pleasant to have around while looking nothing like that.

But it goes deeper than that. because of this obsession with "perfection" women are also taught that their worth is based on their appearance. Men are never taught that. And so we have very different self esteem. it's much easier for a man to be well adjusted all around. Women are stuck with so many innate self esteem and self worth issues that it really kills them in everyday life. far more than they think. And breaking down that wall is really hard.

1. Media, Media, Media. Watch any movie. Count the number of times you see two women talking. Now count the number of times they're discussing anything other than men or babies. Likely total = zero. This ties into Joe's point about the fashion industry - we are constantly being barraged with images (and stories) that paint us as pretty decorations. If you're not pretty - what are you? Men won't want you, and if you don't have a man to talk about.... well you pretty much stop being a woman, right ( ... )

Reproductive rights. In Ohio you can’t even be seen by a gynecologist if you are under 18 without parental consent, That means that if you have crazy parents, you can't even GET your hands on birth control, so when your boyfriend forgets to pull out, you are left taking care of a screaming brat while your peers are going to college. Don’t even get me started on the fact that a lot of states are trying to get amendments passed saying that life negins at conception. Do you know what that means? The outlawing of most forms of birth control, plus young girls being traumatized and delaying their lives due to childcare ( ... )

Gypped? The biggest way that our society's women get gypped is that most will never get the chance to meet me. I'm only one charming man, and I have a life to attend to. I do everything in my power to ensure that more women have the pleasure of knowing me, but there are only 24 hours in a day.

The danger of this is that most women will walk through life in a boring, zombie-like daze, never knowing true pleasure or happiness. This is our generation's crisis.

The most (and sometimes only) important thing about women is how they look. You can parse that however you like: we're too fat, too flat, too tall, too short, too blonde, not blonde enough, et cetera ad nauseum. I'd say that's the biggest gyp out there. Our culture for the last 100 years has been selling to men that they can be fat, dumb, ugly and still get the funny/understanding/super-model-hot wife or girlfriend... look at any sit com or pop-lit novel or romantic comedy. The doofy, balding dude with the pot belly will totally win the day, every day. A doofy, balding, chick with a pot belly is at best a punch line and at worst.... let's not even go there. I realize this first one has been covered already in other comments, but I've been on both sides of the coin, here. I was a cheerleader and ran track in my school-days. I'll show you pictures some time. Back then I wasn't fat yet, but I was too pale or too top-heavy or too plain, then too athletic, then too... et cetera ad nauseum. People won't actually be "people" (as ( ... )
