I died 7 times today, I could have been almost level 10 by now but im still stuck endlessly at 8, Im starting to get the feeling that perhaps FFXI isnt for me @_@ and its only my second day playing, I was really looking forward to being level 10-12 so I could start partying, so what im asking is what should a level 8 Hume BLM be leveling on around

Stop being in such a rush and enjoy the little things in the game that you can do. Trust me... I raced to Lv75 and then I was so bored. Take your time and don't focus purely on leveling you'll find that you level up faster that way ^_^

It's always hard leveling your first job. I remember it took me some 2 months to get my red mage to 20. Nowadays when I'm bored I can level other jobs like paladin and theif to 20 in just a few days each.

It kind of helps to have a sub job, but along the way you learn nicks and tricks to help you out in battle that make things a lot easier when leveling alone.

Black mage is actually one of the fastest leveling jobs there is. At your level, I'd suggest leaving Sarutabaruta and moving on to Tahrongi Canyon. It might also be a good idea to pair up with another person at your level and "duo" slightly harder mobs and get experience chains.

I don't think he can go to Tahrongi Canyon yet... with a PL maybe... but at that level, I say go into Giddeus and kill yagudos/bees there. Don't goo too deep inside though... mobs get harder as you go deeper into Giddeus. Set your home point at the East Sarutabaruta's Outpost, so when you do die, it's easier to run back.
