Yay welcome! I just bought a fiddle off of eBay myself...gosh...less than a month ago and am starting learn it (I also play tin whistle...and a bunch of other wind instruments). I can't afford a teacher much myself...BUT...I went down to the local music shop and they offer fairly cheap lessons...I've taken three for $10 each and they're well worth it...so it might be worth it to look into just to take a lesson or two to get the real basics of bow hold and fingers, etc.

Go check out a couple of my recent questions on here...lots of good responses to some things that might help you out too! And keep in touch here...I'd love to see someone else's progress while I'm struggling through too!

I also asked the chiffers (on chiffandfipple.com) about fiddle strings and got some good suggestions on it there.

They also recommended the Fiddle Forum as a place to find more information from fiddle players.

Hi there!
I did the same thing, and mine sounds fine! I went and got much better rosin and a shoulder rest, though. helps tremendously. I started with getting "Anyone can learn to fiddle" from the library, and "Fiddle Primer" with a dvd and cd just came from another ebay purchase. I'm pleased so far, and totally hooked after 8 days! Good luck to you...

Welcome Aboard! :-)

I know alot of people say don't get musical gear off eBay, but I've had nothing but luck so far. The first electric fiddle I got (yes it's blue!) was off eBay 4 years ago from a guy who only played it FOUR TIMES! The fiddle was in PRISTINE condition and the price was great. Nowadays, my electric blue fiddle is my fiddle of choice at gigs.

Good luck w/ learning the fiddle. Since you already play a variety of other instruments, I am sure you'll do fine :-)

For my strings pedagody class (I'm a music ed major), we had to do reviews of string teaching websites. www.stringpedagogy.com was probably one of the best sites because it has many pictures, a step by step guide for teaching (or in your case, learning), and videos of beginning students. This would be a great FREE way to learn the basics for parts, care, posture and bow hold. Good luck and have fun and if you have any questions, feel free to visit my lj and comment on anything to contact me, my principal instrument is violin and that's what I'm going into. You should see my 11 year old students play their Suzuki pieces, then fiddle...I just gotta pass it on!
